Welcome to ROMS!

Letter from Principal Meldrum
Dear Incoming 5th Grade Families,
Welcome to Royal Oak Middle School! We are thrilled to extend a warm greeting to you and your child as you embark on this exciting new chapter. As your principal, it is my honor to introduce you to our vibrant school community, where we strive to create a supportive and engaging environment for every student.
Transitioning to middle school is a significant milestone, and we understand it can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Please know that our dedicated team of educators is here to ensure a smooth transition for your child and provide the academic, social, and emotional support they need to thrive.
At Royal Oak Middle School, we believe in nurturing the whole child. Our comprehensive International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum challenges students academically while encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. From rigorous core classes to enriching electives and extracurricular opportunities, our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of learning.
Beyond academics, we emphasize character development and community involvement. We encourage students to embrace diversity, show empathy and respect, and become responsible citizens who contribute positively to the world around them. One of the ways we support this is through our CharacterStrong curriculum, which we proudly implemented last year. Every Wednesday, students engage in dedicated Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, and we often extend this learning to families at home.
We value strong partnerships between home and school. Your involvement plays a vital role in your child’s success, and we invite you to participate by attending school events, volunteering through our PTSA, and maintaining open communication with our teachers and staff.
In the coming months, you’ll receive more information about orientation events, registration, and ways to connect with our staff and fellow families. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Once again, welcome to Royal Oak Middle School! We are so excited to have you join our school family and look forward to a rewarding and successful school year ahead.
Warm regards,
Kristin Meldrum

ROMS Suggested School Supply List
ROMS Families,
As you prepare for the upcoming academic year, we want to share the school supply list with you. Please keep in mind that the list is meant to be a helpful guide rather than a strict requirement. We understand that each student's needs and preferences may differ, and we encourage you to use this list as a starting point.
If you find it challenging to acquire all the items on the list, don't worry-our teachers will be understanding and supportive of any limitations and we will do anything we can to make sure your student has anything they need to be successful in middle school.
Thank you,
Kristin Meldrum

The Best Way to Keep Traffic Flowing....PULL FORWARD!
To help keep traffic moving safely and smoothly, we ask all families to please pull all the way forward before letting your student out of the car.
Avoid stopping near the stairs or waiting to watch your child walk inside. Instead, have them ready to exit quickly with everything they need, say goodbye, and allow them to safely walk to Door #1 or Door #24.
Just by pulling forward, we can prevent backups on Washington Street and in the back parking lot — keeping everyone safe and on time.
Thanks for doing your part!
Meet our Special Education Teacher Consultant
Ms. Glappa works the same amount of days as teachers! So keep that in mind if you don't get a response over the summer. Always feel free to email Ms. Meldrum at kristin.meldrum@royaloakschools.org if something comes up and you need a quick answer
The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is a five-year programme, which can be implemented in a partnership between schools, or in several abbreviated (two, three or four year) formats. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP).The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the programme. In the final two years of the programme, carefully-defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals (IBO.org)
