SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
In this second week of the school year, I can say we are off to a great start. As I walk around the building and engage with students and staff, I am encouraged by the positivity and promise I experience in each interaction. Students and staff are consistently implementing our cell phone approach, and there is a strong academic focus in our classrooms.
It was great to see families at last night’s curriculum night and senior class parent meeting. I enjoyed some great conversations with parents and appreciated connecting with those who came. It is great to share key learning outcomes, learning experiences, and assessments with families and align on the trimester and year ahead.
Finally for this week, I want to let families know we will conduct our first lockdown drill of the year this Friday with students. We took time to review our safety and security Standard Response Protocol with students in preparation for Friday’s lockdown drill. If parents and guardians do not want their student to participate in the lockdown drill, please contact the main office.
I look forward to contributing to all of this year’s learning, and I deeply appreciate your partnership as we go on the learning journey together.
One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!
Matthew Boucher
Principal
The basics: Competencies and competency-based learning
Competencies are the most critical and enduring concepts from each content area (such as Math and Language Arts) and the skills and mindsets needed to be successful in school and beyond. Competencies align to state standards and are embedded in our students' learning experiences.
You'll likely hear more about competencies from your child's teacher(s) in the coming weeks and months. To review some basics, check out this brief Competency-Based Learning - Fact Sheet. This fact sheet and additional information can be found on our Personalized Learning webpage which can be translated into multiple languages.
Watch for more information from your child's teacher(s) as we get into the year and feel welcome to reach out with questions at any time.
Complete your review of student behavior and attendance expectations
Each year, we ask students and families to review student behavior and attendance expectations. After reviewing together, we ask families to acknowledge they have done so. This process helps set the tone for students as they begin the year and clarifies for students how we all expect them to conduct themselves each day at school.
Please take five minutes to log into Campus Parent Portal and review these expectations with your student.
- Log in to Campus with your district username and password.
- Select your student in the upper right corner.
- On the main menu click on DOCUMENT.
- Locate the Parent Documents section.
- Click on the 2024-2025 Behavior and Attendance Agreement.
- Review the document with your student.
- Sign and submit.
- Repeat these steps if you have more than one student in the district.
If you haven't done so already, please review at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions about these expectations, reach out to your school principal.
Student Parking Permits
We have seen a significant increase in the number of student drivers in the past couple of years. Last year, we had more student drivers than parking spots in the student lot and overflow lot. We will monitor the sale of parking permits this year to ensure we do not oversell permits beyond what the designated parking accommodates.
We are almost out of student parking spots in their designated parking areas. Students in 11th and 12th grade, be sure to purchase your permit while still available.
