School News (NEW)
I cannot believe we are already at the end of the year! We have had such a wild year of ups and downs, but what has been most impressive is the way this community has formed together and supported each other. We have been able to celebrate Sunnyside in so many ways this year and it just keeps on going.
I have gotten a few questions about class placements for next year. Teachers and staff spend time making heterogeneous class lists and take into consideration friends and best fit class mates. Once they do so, we do take the summer to evaluate the lists and place any new students. Families will find out next year's teacher in August once our teachers return.
Today is Sunnystock which is a tradition that we lost over the pandemic and we are so excited for the music, joy, and fun. Thank you to all of those who are helping to get this off the ground again.
Next week is 8th grade promotion (Thursday night 6pm at Franklin), 5th grade celebration (Friday 9:00am Sunnyside), and the last school dance of the year!
We have had a great time this year having field studies back in the rotation of our world. This week 3rd graders went to the Oregon Historical Society and last week they visited the Japanese American Museum of Oregon.
4th graders went on their last field trip to Mt. Tabor and enjoyed the beautiful weather.
Robin and Michael's class also went to Mt. Tabor and learned more about the volcano and surrounding scenery while also enjoying a special Michael Jansa invented capture the flag game.
Sarah went to Salmon Street Spring and Mary Gage travelled to Pittock Mansion and Balch Creek. Carrie, Mary Lloyd, and Becca went on walking field trips Heather Chaney went to Oaks Park for roller skating!
2nd grade enjoyed Laurelhurst park and 1st grade is going to Hoyt Arboretum today!
As you can see, our teachers make it a priority to go out into the community and experience the world of Portland and beyond. This is a huge undertaking for our students and staff and we cannot do it without you.
If you can donate to our foundation funds before this year ends, please visit:

Thank you for everything!
PS: As we prepare for next year, please note that there will be a few schedule differences. First, there will be early releases once a month (schedule found here).
AND, we will be adding 15 minutes to the end of the day so 3:15 for K-5 and 3:30 for middle school.
More information will be coming from PPS and Sunnyside over the summer.

From the Library: Summer Reading with Bonus Flat Winnie Project (NEW)
Hello Families! Yes it’s time to talk Summer Reading! Your students will be heading home in the next few days with a Summer Reading packet that should include a one pager from me and a folded up game board from Multnomah County Library! It is very important that kids read throughout the summer to help prevent the summer slide, plus, it’s fun! There are vouchers for sporting events, prizes to be had at the public library and in the fall at the Sunnyside Library and, of course, Summer Reading Bingo! This summer we have included something new- the Flat Winnie Project! In the packet from me is a cut out-able Winnie the Library Dog to take on adventures this summer! We would love to see photos of Winnie at the park, the beach or on top of the pyramids at Giza! You can email photos to ggrimm@pps.net or post them on the socials at #flatwinniethelibrarydog. In the fall I'll put together a slide show and we will see all the adventures Flat Winnie went on this summer (She hopes there are lots of reading pictures!) Just in case something happens to your Flat Winnie, our library website has one you can print (as well as directions for using student ID/lunch numbers as library cards at MultCoLib). But how did Winnie get flat? Well, just check out this video to find out! Good thing Gillian had that bike pump handy!!
Happy Reading!

Help needed from 6th & 7th grade families: 2024 8th Grade Promotion (NEW)
True to the great sense of community that Sunnyside has fostered over the many years our children attend school together, it's a tradition that 6th and 7th grade families come together to create a loving 8th Grade Promotion ceremony. Our collaboration is a gift to the 8th graders whose accomplishments and contributions are numerous to our community, their families, and our school. It is a pay it forward gift that we will receive when our children celebrate their promotion.
The 2024 Sunnyside 8th Grade Promotion is Thursday, June 13 from 6-8 pm in the Franklin High School auditorium (on the corner of SE 52nd and SE Woodward). Our job is to coordinate the festivities beforehand and help in both the set up and clean/tear down the day of the event so the 8th graders and their families can relax and celebrate. We ask that ALL 6th & 7th grade families help make this a memorable occasion for our 8th graders and their families.
Please sign up to make this a great event as we send off our 8th graders!
Last Middle School Dance of the Year (help needed)! (NEW)
Our final middle school dance of the year is Friday, June 14th 6-8 pm. To make it happen, we will need chaperones and snacks! Sign up here to chaperone or bring snacks. (Chaperones must have active volunteer background checks.)
The dance starts promptly at 6:00 and ends at 8:00—please make sure students have plans to arrive and leave at these times. Permission slips will come home next week. We request a $5 donation to cover the cost of the dance, but no child will be turned away for lack of funds.
Ice Cream Bike Bus - After School on June 12
Sunnyside is teaming up with other neighborhood schools (Glencoe, Richmond, Abernathy, and Creston) for a big fun end-of-year after-school bike ride to 50 Licks on SE Clinton St. on Wednesday, June 12! We will meet at the portables after school, and head out after middle school dismissal at 3:15.
Parents/guardians are invited and encouraged to join, but kids who are confident riders are welcome to join without their grownups (with parent permission- please email Alida if your kid will be joining without a grownup). We will treat every kid to a scoop of ice cream (no need to send money, though donations to PTSA are always appreciated!). Grownups should plan to either join the ride, pick up kids directly from 50 Licks if not joining, or have a plan for kids to ride home with another adult. Contact Alida (alidacantor@gmail.com or on Konstella) if you can help.
Campfire - Extended enrollment
Campfire has extended their open enrollment to June 14th. See attached flyer HERE
Radio Club
Interested in giving kids independence and freedom to roam the neighborhood, and also giving them a way to stay in touch without cell phones? Hand held radios -- essentially high-powered walkie-talkies with a range of a mile or more – are a fun and simple solution! 2nd grade parent Travis Pritchard has been learning about hand held radios and has developed a guide for families who are interested in learning more.
Interested & want to connect or learn more? Maybe play with radios over the summer? No experience needed. Reach out to Travis (trpritchard@gmail.com) and/or join the new “Radio Club” social group on Konstella.
