OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Dear Westville Families,

As the cool, crisp air of October settles in, we are excited to welcome you to a busy and vibrant month at Westville Middle/High School!🍁


This month brings important testing for our students. Ninth graders will take the PSAT on October 9, followed by our tenth graders on October 23. We encourage everyone to support our students as they prepare for these assessments! Please make sure your child is in attendance on these dates and that their chromebook is charged as the test is digital. Students should get a good night of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast in order to best be prepared for testing.📝


Please note that the grading period ends on October 11, and Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on October 14 and 15 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. An email will be sent with details on how to sign up. We encourage all parents and their children to attend together to discuss progress and goals.🤝


Additionally, students will have fall break from October 16 to 18, so be sure to enjoy this time with family and friends!🍂


For our middle school students, they will be participating in the 2024-2025 Indiana ILEARN testing checkpoint through November 15. This is part of our commitment to help students succeed, as we opted-in for three testing opportunities before the summative ILEARN test opens in April.📃


Mark your calendars for our Trick or Treat Around the Track event on October 30 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.! This is a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together and enjoy some festive fun. We hope to see everyone there!🎃

PSAT TEST

All students in ninth (9th) grade will be taking the PSAT test on Wednesday, October 9th. All students in tenth (10th) grade will be taking the PSAT test on Wednesday, October 23. Students in these grades should be on time and in attendance on these dates. Students should bring their chromebook charged as the test will be digital this year. If you have any questions pertaining to student testing, please contact our Student Test Coordinator, Mrs. Kaegi, at akaegi@westville.k12.in.us.

BODY SAFETY PRESENTATONS

Dunebrook will be presenting to all students in grades 7-12 about Body Safety. An email was sent home with more information. Please contact Mrs. Schnick with any questions regarding the presentation.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be hosted on the evenings of October 14 and 15 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. An email will be sent home with information about how to sign up. All parents/guardians and students are encouraged to attend! If you have any questions regarding conferences, please contact the main office at 785-2531.

FALL MUSIC CONCERT

The secondary fall concert is Thursday, October 3, at 7:00 p.m. Students should arrive at 5:30 p.m. for set up if able, otherwise arrive at 6:00 p.m. Band students should wear black pants and shoes with a white collared shirt. Choir students should wear business attire in fall colors with flat dress shoes. If you have any questions about the concert, please contact Music Director, Mrs. Archer at carcher@westville.k12.in.us. We hope to see you there to celebrate our students hear their talent!🎶

FALL BREAK

Fall Break is October 16-18. School will not be in session. We hope everyone has a great fall break and look forward to everyone's return on Monday, October 21.

LIBRARY LUNCH VISIT

The Westville Public Library will be visiting during lunches on October 21 for National Apple Day! Brooke Skalka, who is completing her Work Based Learning (WBL) internship at the library will help host the event!🍎

BUILDING BLACKHAWKS

Are you interested in being involved with our school community? Building Blackhawks is a great way for adults to assist our students with successful life habits. Building Blackhawks is a mentorship program that works with students grades 7-12! You will be assisting students with academicas, social, emotional, and life skills that are needed to be successful.

Mentors are required to fill out an application, complete a background check, and a training program that will benefit you as the mentor and build rapport with our students. Anyone who is interested should please contact our Director of Student Support Services; Mr. Barton. His email is included on the flyer below. BUFFALO WILD WINGS GIVE BACK NIGHT! SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL!

Westville Middle and High School will be hosting a GIVE BACK NIGHT at Buffalo Wild Wings in Michigan City on November 6 from 5-9 p.m. Mark your calendar now for dine in or take out! Thank you for supporting our school!🦬

2024 Noguchi Teen Art Competition

All art students currently enrolled in Painting, Drawing, & Intro to 2-D participated in the 2024 Noguchi Teen Art Competition put on by the La Porte County Public Library. All submitted projects will be on display at the Main Library location in La Porte (904 Indiana Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350) from October 7-15 in the Study Cafe. Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st ($500), 2nd ($300), and 3rd place ($200). If any Westville student's artwork places in the top three, it will be included in November's newsletter. Good luck to all of our students! Artwork will be returned to the school at the end of the month and put on display in November before being sent home with students!

Updated Cellphone/Earbud Policy

Students may bring electronic devices to school as long as they are not a disruption to the learning process. Cell phones should be turned off or on silent and must be placed in the cell phone caddy in each teacher’s classroom and remain that way throughout the school day during every class period. If a student needs to use the phone, he or she should request to use the phone in the main office. Earbuds are not permitted to be worn during classes or in the hallway. Students who refuse to follow this policy may be subject to disciplinary action.

Chromebooks

Any student experiencing technology issues or who has technology related questions should contact the IT Department at it_helpdesk@westville.k12.in.us.

Transportation

All drop off/pick up students should enter and exit through Door #3 and MUST use the crosswalk for the safety of everyone involved. Students who ride the bus should enter and exit through Door #8 located in the back of the school. Transportation related questions should be directed to Mrs. Kruck, Transportation Director, at rkruck@westville.k12.in.us.
