The First Two Public School Proud Grants Awarded at Laura B. Anderson!
The Oscars mark the end of award season for Hollywood, but for the Sioux Falls Public School's Education Foundation, award season is just getting started!
Kick off of the 2025 Public School Proud Grant season started last week at Laura B. Anderson Elementary!
Carol Neale received the first award for her proposal, “‘Bee’ Explorers”
She plans to use $1,500 to purchase a light table, literacy trays, math manipulatives, a sand and water table, and sensory floor tiles that will be used by 60 Early Childhood students. In the application, she wrote, “Sensory play enhances the curriculum by providing a foundation for learning through exploration and engagement of multiple senses, which supports the development of cognitive, motor, language, and social skills, allowing children to better understand and interact with their environment. These materials also foster creativity and support brain development.”
Emmala Gunnare received the second Public School Proud Grant! She will use $1,250 for her application, “The World Around Us”
With these funds, she will purchase costumes for dramatic play, puppets, floor puzzles, rocket ships, space figurines, farm animals, tractors and construction vehicles, dinosaur fossil skeletons, toy tools, and more. In the proposal, she wrote, “Dramatic play has a vast number of opportunities for hands-on and immersive learning experiences. When a dramatic play area is rich with materials, the teacher can create literacy, writing, math, and motor skill practice with these items. Students will also be able to use social emotional and critical thinking skills when playing with their peers, and they can immerse themselves in scenarios that apply to real world situations.”
Happy School Social Worker Week!
In the Sioux Falls School District, every student's journey is unique. For many of the kids we serve, our school social workers are there every step of the way! Whether offering a listening ear, connecting families to resources, or advocating for students' well-being, their dedication ignites hope and creates lasting impact in our schools.
This year's theme, Unite to Ignite: Celebrating Our Impact, is a perfect reflection of how our social workers bring people together to create brighter futures for students.
THANK YOU to our incredible school social workers for your compassion and care!
Employee Appreciation Day is Friday!
With more than 3,000 employees serving 24,000 students, the Sioux Falls School District is not only the largest school district in South dakota, we are one of the largest teams in the city working toward a common goal, helping students succeed!
Whether in the classroom, behind the scenes, or out in the community, every role matters and every employee plays part in creating a supportive, welcoming environment where out students can thrive.
THANK YOU ALL for your dedication, your passion, and the countless ways you show up for students each and every day. SFSD wouldn't be what it is without you!
Topping Off Ceremony Marks Significant Progress for LeBeau Elementary
Last week, we celebrated a special milestone in the construction of Sioux Falls School District’s 24th elementary school, Marcella LeBeau!
SFSD hosted its first-ever “Topping Off Ceremony,” which marks the placement of one of the final beams of the structure, symbolizing progress, unity, and good fortune for the future students and staff who will call this school home.
The event also honored Marcella LeBeau, the school’s namesake, recognizing her legacy as a Lakota nurse, leader, and advocate.
Construction is on track to open this fall and we look forward to serving families in the growing northwest Sioux Falls neighborhood!
We look forward to welcoming students and staff for the first year of operation in August of 2025!
Operation Hope & Caring at Air Madness Raised Over $10k! Thanks to all who came!

Tune Into Nature and Yourself
The breathtaking landscapes throughout this country can motivate you to cultivate a stronger, healthier, happier, and more fulfilled version of yourself. Take a break from a fast-paced life and live in the moment. Sometimes all you need is a little pick me up, a mood-booster, a breather, or some inspiration. Fortunately we know that during difficult times, a dose of nature can be the best medicine. Wherever you are, whatever your life’s circumstances, you have an open invitation to take care of yourself by tapping into the healing power of nature. Any time spent outdoors can really bring you to a better understanding of nature and sense of peace within yourself.
Really connect with nature and allow yourself to take in all it has to offer. Here are a few ways you can experience nature from the window, the neighborhood, a nearby park or trail or virtually:
- Enjoy a view of nature from your window, your porch, or balcony.
- Enjoy a five-minute break in front of the window.
- Participate in the Spring Bird Migration Watch from your own backyard.
- Can you find any signs of spring in the plants around you?
- Watch the clouds go by.
Choose activities that can be easily incorporated in your life and schedule. These can be brand new activities you have never tried, or activities you are picking up again after some time off. The choices are endless. Here are some ideas for spending time in nature:
- Take a walk, run, or bike ride outside.
- Take your dog for a walk.
- Go fishing.
- If you have a backyard, pack a picnic and have it with a couple others.
- Read a book or magazine for half an hour on your stoop.
- Try a neighborhood workout on your driveways like Zumba.
- Take your yoga mat outside and try out some poses with a video. Try a free app or a fitness YouTube channel.
- Make a video call to a friend or loved one while outdoors and share the view.
- Draw a hopscotch board on your sidewalk for passersby.
- Put a zipline, hammock, or tree swing in your yard.
- Set up a tent in your backyard, deck, or balcony.
- Have a bonfire.
- Start your own garden (plant seeds).
- Hang nest-making materials from your balcony, porch or a tree branch for birds to find.
Can’t get outdoors? Explore these ideas for a virtual experience:
- Practice mindfulness by downloading a mediation app
- Bring the outdoors inside with Find your Virtual Park and explore your favorite national parks virtually.
- Take yourself on a virtual camping trip. Set up your tent/pillow fort, project a campfire, and play nature sounds on a speaker.
- Try using Virtual Reality (VR) headsets to take a walk in nature to reduce anxiety and stress levels. Check out YouTube for 360-degree virtual hike videos
