This week at PLA93 we celebrated the 100th day of school, began our Black History Month door decorating contest, and held our kindergarten/1st grade honors ceremony.

Next Friday, February 7th, scholars are encouraged to dress up as a black history figure of their choosing, one that was highlighted in their homeroom, or to wear a shirt that represents black pride. If you have any questions, please follow up with your child's teacher.

Our next family event is on Thursday, February 13th from 4pm-6pm. PLA@93 will be hosting a Sweetheart Dance. We hope to see you there!

On Friday, February 7th and again on Friday, February 28th, scholars and teachers have the opportunity to dress up to celebrate Black History Month. Scholars may choose to dress up as their favorite historical or living figure or wear a shirt that represents Black pride. Please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.

Our KDG and 1st grade scholars dressed up to celebrate the 100th Day of school. We're all 100 days smarter!

Join us on Thursday, February 13th from 4:00-6:00 pm in the school gym. There will be music, refreshments, and snacks. Pictures will also be available. We hope to see you there. This is a free event. A parent is required to be present at school for your child to attend.

This week's community resource is Immigrant Connection Legal Network. Immigrant Connection Legal Network's mission is to ensure greater access to high-quality, low-cost immigration legal services across the US. Immigrant Connection Legal Network sites provide high-quality, low-cost immigration legal services. Department of Justice accredited legal representatives provide consultations for immigration questions and determine eligibility for various immigration pathways. Case types include: citizenship and naturalization, family petitions, adjustment of status, renewal of lawful permanent residency, DACA renewals, U Visas, VAWA (Violence Against Women Act), fiancé visas, religious worker petitions, and consular processing.To get in contact with the Immigrant Connection Legal Network in Indianapolis, please visit https://www.iclegal.org/indy or call 574-735-0000 to schedule an appointment.

Immigrant Connection Legal Network recommends that all immigrant families carry a "Red Card." All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The ILRC’s Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. If you would like a copy of a red card please send an email to kwood@phalenacademies.org indicating how many cards you need and what language they are needed in.

This week's second community resource is Great Families; a student and parent based service through the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside (CAFE). Great Families is a 2Gen program opportunity for families, focused on parents and children simultaneously with the purpose of providing pathways for their success and stability through education, financial security, and overall health.

Once enrolled families will receive:

• Family Support Coach: meets with the parents to discuss overall family needs such as health, education, and referral to additional community support.
• Student Success Coach: meets with the students for tutoring and other learning opportunities.
• Financial Coach: meets with the parent one-on-one to discuss things such as budgeting, credit building, and saving.

Please be aware that as winter approaches we are at risk for severe weather. In the case that school must be delayed or canceled, you can expect the following:

1.) All of the major Indianapolis news stations will be notified to broadcast the cancelation or delay.

2.) You will receive an email from the school notifying you of the cancelation or delay.

3.) Scholars will be provided with work prior to or after the event to complete for an e-learning day.
