Full Day Kindergarten Recommendation | watch
Representatives from Wight & Co. presented an overview of the approaches shared at the Board meeting on May 15. They shared more details about the approaches for the Board to consider to provide space for full-day kindergarten by building a 12 or 14 classroom addition to Churchill Elementary School. The new addition at Churchill would provide space for full-day kindergarten for students from each of the four District 41 elementary schools.
Board members asked questions and engaged in conversation about the information presented. Dr. Kaczkowski and Assistant Superintendent for Finance, Facilities and Operations Eric DePorter expanded on the cost projections and fund balance should the Board decide to move forward. The Board also discussed grant opportunities and fundraising through the D41 Kids Foundation. Dr. Kaczkowski clarified that the cost projections are not based on charging tuition but that this Board or future Boards have that option to consider if it becomes necessary. Dr. Kaczkowski also clarified that the administrative recommendation will always align with a more conservative approach. The Board can decide that they want to take a larger financial risk. The Board confirmed that they are not looking to charge families a tuition for full-day kindergarten, should the district build space to provide it.
The Board will be voting on directing the district to move forward with next steps for building either a 12 or 14 classroom addition to Churchill Elementary School for full-day kindergarten at the June 20, 2023 meeting.
