Bridge Bulletin
March 15, 2024
Principal Chat
I hope you had a fabulous week! The weather last weekend and Monday gave me hope that SPRING might actually be on its way! I am also hopeful the sun will start rising earlier so it isn't dark at 7:30 am when some of our students start arriving at school.
Last week Mrs. Toponce, our curriculum specialist and I attended the PCBL Summit (personalized competency based learning). We learned about so many great ways we can improve Bridge's PCBL journey as well as being validated for so many of the great things we are already doing. We are super excited to put some changes in place for next year and to share them all with our students. This week's bulletin explains PCBL and shows pics of the many ways Bridge implements the PCBL framework.

PCBL (Personalized Competency Based Learning) in Action
Utah has a framework and a grant process to support schools who wish to implement PCBL. The framework has five essential components from which schools can choose to implement processes aligned with PCBL:
- Learner Agency - goal setting, self-assessment, choice in learning
- Customized Supports - accessible learning based on student data
- Social Emotional Learning - acquire and apply knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for managing emotions, setting goals, showing empathy, decision making, maintaining positive relationships
- Demonstrated Competency and Assessment - applying knowledge and essential skills to progress through learning
- Culture of Learning - structure, policies and practices to support and engage learners
This year Bridge received a competitive grant from Utah's PCBL department to help us implement the PCBL initiatives at Bridge. As a personalized learning school we had many of these areas in place; however, the funding through the grant helped us improve on our PCBL processes. We are completing another grant to enhance PCBL at Bridge next year.

FIELD DAY DONATIONS NEEDED
We are planning for our Field Day bash which is the last day of school - Thursday, May 30 (this is also a short day). For Field Day kids will participate in: bounce houses, face painting, yard games, water activity, magician, school movie, yearbook signing, and an outdoor BBQ.
We are requesting donations of the following items. Bring any items into the office.
- Cans of soda (any kind especially the fun flavors in Shasta or the other off brand names)
- Prizes kids can win at the Games. IDEAS - new toys from kid's meals, items bought in bulk at Zurchers or Oriental Trading, bulk items from the Dollar store.
Maturation
At Bridge, instead of having a "maturation night" for 5th grade students which other schools typically do, we opt to provide parents the information so they can determine how much they want to share with their child and at which age they want to share it. For many girls, by the time they are in 5th grade they have already started menstruation and it is a little too late for a lesson on maturation. We believe parents can best determine what students should know about maturation and puberty, and when a child should know it.
Our maturation committee met and reviewed information from different sources. They determined, and our Board approved, to use the maturation information provided by Provo School District. The maturation information includes videos and packets for girls and boys that you can download and share with your child.
This is the link to the MATURATION information.
KIDS READ NOW Grant
Once again we were approved for the Kids Read Now grant which sends home FREE books to all of our K-3 students during the summer. Students will get THREE books between June and August which are mailed to the address in Aspire. Teachers will select the books according to the student's reading level.

Emily Verschuren
Hello there, I’m Ms. Emily and here is a little introduction about myself. I’m one of the newest additions to the wonderful 3rd grade pod as a para! I’m really grateful and happy I have the opportunity to work with such amazing and passionate teachers and to be able to form part of their team, helping kiddos with their learning process through visible learning traits, reinforcing expectations and making sure I’m there for them!
I’m 23 years old and I grew up in Venezuela. Spanish is my first language, I can also speak read and write a little of Italian.
One of my hobbies that I love is dancing. Since I was little I have been been in flamenco, ballet and contemporary dance classes and played music as well. Growing up I was in a choir and played viola in an orchestra for a couple years. I love art and I also used to draw a lot.
Right now my hobbies have changed since I don’t live in a tropical setting anymore, since years ago I learned how to adapt to a different culture, language, and weather which is completely opposite to what I was used to, I found myself loving winter season and the snow so much that I learned how to snowboard on my free time! In summer I love riding bikes and hiking any trail that I can encounter! I always like trying new things and having fun with the process! I also love reading and watching new movies! Going to the movie theater is something I really enjoy and would never change!
I love my family and my two cats, both males. One is named Tarzan and the other one is Casper. They are the most lazy and spoiled cats ever! After a bad day they always make it better.
My parents always encouraged me and my siblings to try out different kind of disciplines and creative activities that we liked so we could learn new things and acquire new knowledge! They let us know it has always been important to experiment and explore to be able to create and become who you want to be :)
Visible Learning - Thoroughness
I will...
- Plan my work.
- Pay attention to details.
- Make a list so I don't forget.
- Finish what I started.
- Clean up along the way.
By using these visible learning traits each day students will become lifelong learners who are set up for success. Please use this same verbiage at home and recognize when your student is using this trait.

Volunteers
- Cutting Watch Me Learn tickets (stop by the office).
- Pulling weeds in the rock areas and park strips (we have all the area in front of the school and up 4800 S along the school fence).
- Sorting construction paper into like colors (stop by the office).
- Using rakes and shovels to redistribute the gravel from the bottom of the retention area in front of the school to the top area to cover the black landscape screen.
- Parking lot duty before and after school (just check in at the office, put on a yellow vest and talk to Travis in the crosswalk for instructions).
Once your family has volunteered 30 hours they can stop by the front office and ask for a VOLUNTEER FROG. There is no formal tracking program - just track the hours yourself. Then, write your family's name on the frog and tape the frog on our volunteer pond in the front foyer.
If you want to volunteer but do not have the time, you can donate $90 to cover the 30 hours. If you choose to donate, complete the volunteer form. You can donate in the office or by using our DONATE icon on the home page of our website.
Volunteering or donating is OPTIONAL and is not required to be a student or a parent of a student at Bridge Elementary.
