Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 21st June 2024
Special Spanish Friends
Special Friends
Year 6 have had a fabulous few days with our Spanish guests. On Tuesday, they welcomed them into school and from the minute they arrived, the children were all communicating and working together. They started by getting to know each other by asking questions in English and Spanish. Then, they all worked through some orienteering tasks. It was fantastic to watch them communicate so well despite the language barrier. They played some games and also taught each other some rhymes and clapping games. Before going for lunch, they created a collaborative piece of artwork to remember this amazing opportunity. In the afternoon, they taught the Spanish children how to play rounders and sat in the fire circle to toast some marshmallows. ¡ Qué rico! It was a great experience for both classes and everyone could not wait for Friday.
On Friday, everyone met at school ready to walk to Fountains Abbey. We packed our lunches, put on our sunscreen and set off in our small groups. We walked all the way to Fountains respectfully and responsibly. The conversations didn't stop all the way there. We rested for a picnic in the sunshine before heading into Fountains Abbey to enjoy the landscape and the park. What a fantastic experience for everyone involved. The Year 6 children really did do us proud. They were well behaved and unbelievably welcoming.
Exploring Sculpture at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Year 3 at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
On Thursday, Year 3 had an amazing art trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. They had a brilliant time exploring the sculptures with artist Oksana. The children created rubbings using the Three Stones for Three Trees that were created by inspirational artist, David Nash. They rubbed natural materials such as twigs and leaves on to paper against the rough stones and tree bark. One of the favourite sculptures of the day was the eye-catching Buddha with its shiny crystals and gemstones. Engraved in the back was a calming sitting place for meditating. The children also explored the work of Barbora Hepworth, sketching and sculpting their own inspired designs.
Grow Your Money Challenge 2024
Enterprise Week
As mentioned in our newsletter last week, we will be having an Enterprise Fair on Friday 28th June. As part of the children’s STEM work each class has developed products and services that they can sell to grow their money. Read below to see what each class is doing!
Children are welcome to bring some money to spend at the fair. Products and services generally cost between 50p and £1.
Parents and carers are invited to come along on Friday afternoon at 2.45pm to enjoy the fair and support the children’s endeavours. At this time we will open the main gate to the playground (back gate will remain closed until 3.10pm). Parents and carers of children in Nursery to Year 4 are more than welcome to collect their child/children from their classroom/s when they arrive to accompany them at the fair.
All children will be given the opportunity to attend the fair in the afternoon prior to parents and carers arriving. If you are not able to attend, children can be collected in the usual manner at the end of the day. Children in Year 5 and Year 6 will be released at 3.15pm when the fair ends.
I am sure it will be a lovely afternoon and children will learn a lot about how to be enterprising.
Nursery
The children in Nursery thought long and hard about what they could make for our school Enterprise Day... It had to be something that they would want to buy and enjoy using. After a unanimous decision, it was decided that the nursery children will make bags of different coloured play dough to sell. They are really looking forward to putting their maths and science skills in to practise.
Reception
For the enterprise challenge Reception will be making paperweights. They will use their painting skills to create colourful designs on the rocks so each one is unique.
Year 1
For Enterprise Day, Year 1 will be baking some tasty pup treats for your four legged friends. They will be following a vet approved recipe and their treats will be available in small and large packs. Prices will be between £1 and £2. We are sure your doggies will love our puptastic treats!
Year 2
In Year 2 the children wanted to make their project using recycled materials, they thought about different things then came up with the idea of using fallen pinecones. Year 2 will be crafting these into hedgehogs to sell to everyone who would like to purchase one. Each hedgehog will be individual and have its own name.
Year 3
The Year 3 children had some very creative ideas for Enterprise week. Although in Year 3 they all had to make the same thing, they wanted the opportunity to experiment with their own individual ideas. The winning idea was to create hama bead designs, this way the children could choose their own design and make it how they wanted. The children will be selling their range of hama bead designs as key rings and coasters. If you have any special requests, please let us know.
Year 4
On enterprise day, Year 4 will be making and selling energy bars. The children have looked on Aldi's website to choose options for their energy bar and then went to survey a 'target audience' which were years 3, 5 and 6, children with dietary requirements and adults. They will be visiting the supermarket to buy the most popular ingredients for each bar and then will make the bars next week.
Year 5
When the Year 5 children were tasked with the challenge of coming with a product to sell or providing a service for our enterprise fair they had lots of ideas. Firstly, they brainstormed their ideas and got themselves into groups of 6 with others who had similar ideas.
The children have had to price all the items they require whilst attempting to find cheapest retailer. They have had to detail the costings and work out what their profit would be if all their items sold or an estimated profit based on the number of people they hoped would take part in their game. Then they have been busy making their products. The children have also had to create team names and design logos as well as creating advertisements for their product or service to share. On enterprise day look out for the Year 5 children who have made bracelets, keyrings, smoothies and other groups who are making games for others to play including tin can alley and a raffle.
The children are hoping to making as much profit as they can because they have the added challenge of trying to make more profit than the children in Year 6!
Year 6
Year 6 have worked together to consider a range of activities that would make the most profit. They have come up with stalls and activities focusing on archery, football, refreshments, tattoos and attack the teacher (with a water gun). They are keen to take on the children and beat Year 5 in their endeavours.
Town Planning!
Creating a Model of Ripon
In Reception we have been learning all about towns, the countryside and the seaside. We looked at pictures of buildings in Ripon and have worked hard to recreate those buildings using resources from our Creation Station. We have made the cathedral, a house, Morrisons, a church and the town hall. We have been playing with our buildings in the small world area and have been using positional language to describe how to get from one building in the town to another.

We always enjoy sharing who our Stars of the Week are in our special Celebration Worship on Friday.
