Message from our Interim President Dr. Tracey Poitras Collins
Tansi, Ahneen, Aba Washded,
Mother Earth has given us a reminder that we are still in the middle of winter as we enter into February on a very cold day. My role as president has taught me a lot about the requirements to deliver quality programs as we support you in your academic journey. The winter semester has begun and the college staff are working hard to put into place the supports that you need to be successful. I want to encourage everyone to make time to work on your assignments, to exercise, and pray.
We will be providing wellness sessions for students and staff; these sessions will include healthy eating, exercise, ribbon skirt making and more activities as we proceed with the winter session. We will also have writing, research, and other skill workshops for you.
Part of my role is to ensure we have the supports in place for you to ensure graduation from your program. Best wishes for a successful winter term.
Until next month,
Interim President Poitras-Collins

Message from Department Head of General Studies and Management Programs
It feels like we were just getting ready for the holiday break, and now here we are in February! Congrats to all of those who've pushed through the Fall term finals and the cold snaps, and are still pushing on. With Valentine's Day and the Reading Week break to look forward to, February is always a nice quick month, and the rest of the academic year flies from there. If you need anything along the way, reach out to me, your instructors, or Tiffany, our programs assistant. If you don't need anything in particular, I'm always good for a quick visit and a coffee. See you soon!

Message from our Elders

Message from Department Head of Social Work
The Social Work Department Diploma and Degree students have begun the final term of their 2 year programs. We are exceptionally proud of all our students who have made it this far and who are months away from success. Three rules to be successful in any academic setting are 1. Go to Class; 2. Complete all the readings; 3 Complete your assignments; and 4. Reach out for support when needed. If you adhere to these simple rules, you will always be successful!

Message from our Student Support Coordinator
Message from our Learning Strategist
Yellowhead Tribal College promotes student support by teaching various success strategies and learning methods for student achievement. We want to encourage our students to connect with us to benefit by adding more tools to their academic tool kit. I can help provide insight and understanding in areas students may find challenging. It is important to remember all students can learn how to learn, we can work together to create a learning plan and tailor strategies that will be of best fit.
Some areas of challenge that I can help with include:
- Planning and organization;
- Studying and note taking;
- Test prep/test anxiety;
- Motivation and time management;
- Goal setting;
- Reading and writing; and,
- Accepting help, etc.
Thank you, Ay-hay, Ish-Nish, Mii'gwetch
You are getting closer to your dreams each day. Keep up the hard work, and you will get the best results. I wish you a great future because you deserve it.
Indigenous Relations Community Bulletin
Indigenous Languages Month
What is Indigenous Languages Month?
February is Indigenous Languages Month. This is a month to celebrate the diverse Indigenous languages in the Northwest Territories (NWT) and to encourage everyone to learn about and use them with pride.
To reverse the loss of language and culture and to keep Indigenous languages alive and thriving, they need to be spoken in homes, and communities so that intergenerational transmission can be restored. During this month take time to learn about the Indigenous languages of the NWT and how you can ensure their survival.
Learning about Indigenous languages is a step forward that each Canadian can take on the path to reconciliation and reclamation. Taking part in Indigenous Languages Month is one way to ensure NWT’s official Indigenous languages flourish for generations to come.
What led to the creation of Indigenous Languages Month?
National Aboriginal Languages Day (now National Indigenous Languages Day) was created by Assembly of First Nations (AFN) in 1989 to create awareness across Canada of the languages of the First Peoples, and to build support for their preservation.
National Aboriginal Languages Day was first celebrated on March 31, 1993. Since then, this day celebrates and encourages Indigenous language speakers, elders, knowledge keepers and youth across the country to live and learn in their mother tongue.
In 1993, Betty Harnum, the first Languages Commissioner of the NWT, on the recommendation of NWT residents, asked the AFN to devote more than one day to celebrate the importance of language and culture in our lives. The AFN agreed and declared the entire month of March as Aboriginal Languages Month.
In 2018, based on recommendation of the official language boards, February was declared the new Indigenous Languages Month in the NWT.
