Principal Arroyo's Message
September has quickly found us and we are busier than ever! Students continue to strengthen their back to school skills and our teachers did an amazing job presenting to families on Back to School Night. Together, we can work together and support our Bulldogs!
Thank you to those who have reached out with an interest in joining our School Site Council. A ballot will come out later this week so it's not too late to send an email to me with your interest in this school committee.
I hope to see you on Tuesday morning at 8:30 for our Coffee with the Principal. I will be reviewing policies, answering questions from the Google Form, and sharing information about Hirsch.
Can you help us reduce our lost and found? Please label all sweatshirts, jackets, water bottles, and lunch boxes with your student's name, or at least room number so we can help them find a home. And talking about lunch, are you interested in subbing as a noon supervisor at Hirsch? We are looking for substitute noon supervisors from 10:55-12:55 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We would love to have you help us provide safe coverage during this time period. Inquire in the office if this is something that interests you.
Thank you for taking the time to read our monthly newsetter and Weekly Bits!
~Ms. Arroyo

Book Fair Volunteers Needed!
Mrs. Winmill's Reading Corner
September Reading Corner with Mrs. Winmill
We are concluding our first full week of being back in the library and it has been a great week! If your student has not returned their library contract, please help them be successful with this. I appreciate your help and support.
We will be having our Scholastic Fall Book Fair October 12th-18th. I am looking for family volunteers who can help with organizing, advertising, and assisting. I am asking a little earlier this year as I would like to have everything planned out. Please email me at kwinmill@fusdk12.net if you are able to help.
I was able to attend Santa Clara County of Education’s Library Camp the last week in August along with 20 other LMTs from FUSD. It was an event full of “Library Joy”. I was able to meet Mychal Threets (PBS’ resident librarian, ALA’s 2024 Love My Librarian Award winner, and all around amazing person!), Booki Vivat (author of Frazzled series), Nicole Chen (author of How We Say I Love You and Lily Xiao Speaks Out), Kara Chen (YA author), and Darshana Khiani (author of How to Wear a Sari). All the LMTs attended many helpful classes and hope to spread their love and joy of books and reading this school year. Let’s make this year a year of Library Joy and Happiness!
I have recently updated the Hirsch Elementary School Library Website. The library schedule, BookBreak information, 100 Book Reading Challenge, SORA, and literary events in the area are available for you to learn about. Here is the link to the library’s Amazon Wish List.
Take care and keep reading!

Home Lunch Dropoff
Home lunches brought after your student has started school must be dropped off by 10:45 am to the cart outside the office. Your student's lunch should be clearly labeled with first name, last name, and room number. We highly encourage you to teach your child to be responsible and bring their own lunch daily if they are bringing a home lunch.
Absences
Calling in Absences
Please contact the school's absence line, day or night, at 510-657-3537 and then press 7. Please be sure to state: 1)your student's first and last name, 2)student's classroom number, 3)reason for the absence, 4)your name and relationship to the student.
If these absences are not cleared by a parent guardian within 48 hours, they will be considered unexcused. Excessive absences and/or tardies, excused or unexcused, may result in a truancy warning.
Make-up work may be requested on the second consecutive day of a student's illness.
Counselor's Corner
Hello Families,
This month at Hirsch we are participating in “Start with Hello Week”. "Start with Hello Week" is a week for our school and community to feel more connected and for students to learn how to reach out to those who may be lonely or need support. It is from the Sandy Hook Promise to promote inclusivity and reduce school violence. Through activities, dress-up days, and challenges, every Bulldog will learn more about how to be an upstander by helping other students who are lonely or need support. A new school year can be both exciting and challenging, here are some ways you can help!
Students will learn about the three step process to help:

We hope the proximity & familiarity with the school environment and the opportunity to nurture your child’s interests in Chess will once again bring you back to the tournaments this year. Like last year we will have a single registration link for the entire year. If you register before 9/9 your child will play all 8 tournaments. If you join later your student will play fewer games. This year we will be accepting only card payment, no cash. Please register before you show up to the tournament!
We look forward to see you all on Monday September 9 for the first tournament this year more details in the cheddarup link.
