Volume 1, No. 4 November 11, 2024
Opening Message
Dear CBSD Families and Community Members,
As we enter the month of November, I would like to express my deep appreciation for all the veterans in our community. Your courage, dedication, and service to our country have a lasting impact on our community and nation. We are grateful for the tremendous rights and privileges we enjoy because of your sacrifices. On behalf of the CBSD, thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for our students and our community. I encourage everyone to take a moment this month to thank our veterans.
With the holiday season approaching, we recognize that this time of year, though joyful for many, can also bring increased stress and anxiety for some of our students. With an extended Thanksgiving break and additional days off throughout November, the disruption in routine can be dysregulating for certain students. School provides the stability and structure many rely on, and extended breaks can lead to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.
To support our students through these challenges, our dedicated staff is focusing on a few key strategies:
Increase Positive Interactions: We are encouraging a positive approach by increasing the ratio of positive to negative interactions from the usual 3-to-1 to 5-to-1. This approach helps students feel more supported, secure, and valued, especially those who may be experiencing heightened stress or anxiety. Small gestures of encouragement and kindness can make a significant difference.
Behavior as Communication: We’re aware that disruptive behaviors can often signal unmet needs or underlying struggles. Our team understands that behavior is a form of communication, and by approaching these situations with empathy, we can better support each student.
Maintain Predictability and Structure: Where possible, we’re striving to keep routines predictable and will communicate any schedule changes clearly. Consistent routines can help students feel more at ease and supported during holiday breaks.
Mindful Discipline Practices: During this season, we’re mindful of the impact that certain discipline practices, especially those that involve time away from school, can have on students’ well-being. When appropriate, we are focusing on in-school interventions that keep students supported within the school environment.
Access to Support Resources: Our counselors, administrators, and school psychologists are available to provide support for students navigating the emotions that come with the holiday season. If the holidays bring added stresses for your student(s), please don’t hesitate to reach out to school staff or the district office. We are here to help, and early support and intervention can help mitigate some of the anxiety and dysregulation students may feel during the holiday breaks.
Community Resources: If you or someone you know needs support during the holiday season, the Coos Health & Wellness Community Resources website is an excellent place to start. The website offers access to a variety of local services, from behavioral health support and counseling to food assistance and housing resources. During a time when stress and anxiety can increase, these resources provide essential support and guidance to help individuals and families in our community. Visit their site to explore options that can make the holiday season a little easier and ensure you or your loved ones are well-supported.
Thank you for your support and commitment to your student(s) and our schools. The dedication of our families and community members is invaluable, and we are grateful for each of you.
One Compass—One Goal—One Mission,
Dr. Ainsworth
