H.E.S. HAPPENINGS
Parent/Family Edition
OCTOBER 2024
Greetings Hopkins Elementary Families,
As the leaves change colors and the weather shifts to cooler temperatures, we want to remind you to ensure your child has a light jacket for recess on those brisk autumn days.
This year, we continue focusing on the 5 Learner Dispositions that guide our students in their learning journey: engagement, critical thinking, evaluation, collaboration, and determination**. Understanding and embodying these dispositions can significantly enhance the learning process.
During the first nine weeks of school, we concentrated on "engagement." To illustrate this, we have used the chart below, which outlines the six Levels of Engagement.
1. Driving
2. Investing
3. Participating
4. Withdrawing
5. Avoiding
6. Disrupting
We encourage you to support your child in becoming an evaluator of their own learning. Each morning, have them set a personal goal regarding which level of engagement they aim to achieve for the day. This practice can empower them to take ownership of their educational experience.
Remember, the letters in the words "parents" and "partners" are the same. When parents become active partners in their child's education, they play a crucial role in their child's success. Your ongoing involvement is not just appreciated, but it's also vital for a productive and engaging month ahead.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. Let's make this an extraordinary year!
Warm regards,
Audrey White-Garner, M Ed.
Principal
