It’s our aim to provide you with high-quality professional learning opportunities throughout the year. While the school year will be winding down over the next few weeks, our professional development catalog is still brimming with fresh offerings. AND...our Summer/Fall PD Guide is in development! Make sure you tune in to upcoming PD News Updates to get a jump on your registrations for the new school year!
Adding Up Student Discussion in the Math Classroom
Do you find yourself doing most of the talking in your math classes or wishing more of your students would share their thinking? With the implementation of the Next Generation Learning Standards, we know that the 8 Mathematical Practices have shifted into focus. See how Math Practice 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, can foster greater engagement, deeper mathematical understanding, and a sense of community within your classroom. Participants will experience strategies that can be used across grade levels to foster student discussion and we will rethink what "active participation” can look like. -Please bring an upcoming unit to plan implementation of ideas and strategies from our discussion.

(Re)Balancing Balanced Literacy Part 2: A Fresh Look at Foundational Reading Skills
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Friday, May 12, 2023.
Attend this follow up, more in-depth session to "(Re) Balancing Literacy” in which we will take a deeper dive into the foundational reading standards, K-2, and specific ways we can rebalance our balanced literacy structures, when appropriate. The text, Shifting the Balance (2021) by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates is highly recommended for this session, but not required. It is NOT necessary to have attended Part 1. This course is recommended for K-2 teachers, interventionists, reading specialists and curriculum leaders.
Teaching and Assessing with Authentic Texts in the 3-8 Classroom
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
In this half day session, we will consider the important role of authentic texts and assessments in English Language Arts instruction, and how authentic texts serve as a vehicle for scaffolding students toward meeting and exceeding the expectations of the Next Generation Learning Standards in a manner that carries them into the world of published texts and writing. This work will be informed by an examination of the Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA, the NYS Educator Guide to the 2023 Grades 3-8 English Language Arts and work from teachers and leaders in the field. This day will begin as a 3-8 group and then move into breakout groups to:
• Review the text types and tasks we currently use and determine gaps
• Consider how we approach on-demand writing
• Collaborate and create assessments and/or mini units to address gaps
Mathematical Practices: Look-Fors for Leaders
Join us at BOCES 2 Professional Development Center on Thursday, June 1, 2023.
With the implementation of the Next Generation Standards PK-12, our instructional focus should be on the 8 Mathematical Practices. As instructional leaders, we know not all of us have a background in mathematics, which is why it is important to know how to best support teachers in the implementation of these essential standards. We will see the practices in action in classrooms, use tools to help in evaluation and feedback for teachers, and have discussions on the importance and rationale behind this focus. This workshop is geared towards administration and instructional leaders or teams who support math classrooms.
Bringing JOY to our Literacy Instruction
Join us virtually via Zoom on Friday, June 2, 2023.
Join this hour-long virtual PD workshop to explore instructional approaches and protocols that will bring the JOY back into your reading and writing workshops. We will discuss key focuses that will make literacy instruction a more joyful, engaging experience! Among these focuses are choice, challenge, connection, play and discovery.
This event will be online via Zoom and the invitation will be sent the day before to all who are registered for this event.
