The Sitton Standard: October 2024
News and Updates from Sitton Elementary School
Fall is in Full Swing at Sitton!
October has been a wonderful month! Students are really getting into the rhythm of their routines and are diving into learning. As the days get shorter, please make sure your child is getting to bed before 9 p.m. so they are rested and ready for the day! For those in first grade and up, encourage them to read to you daily. This helps build reading stamina and is a great way to connect with your child.
It has been wonderful to have SUN School back in action! Students are really enjoying new enrichment classes such as Nature Exploration, Fencing, Embroidery, and of course, Soccer! As a reminder, make sure to save the Sitton SUN School phone number: 971-347-5725.
Next week is Sitton Spirit Week with a different theme every day. Check your child's purple folder for a flier with more details soon. Thursday, 10/31, will be Pajama Day. A little Halloween flair is fine, but we ask families to avoid full costumes as they can be distracting, and costumes often get lost or destroyed before the end of the day. Additionally, our SUN School families and 4th graders are hosting a Día de los Muertos ofrenda near the main entrance, and all families are welcome to participate. Fliers with more information are going home this week. Lastly, please note that this Wednesday is an early dismissal day. We will have a whole-school assembly to share some joy and celebrate our falcon award winners and students with perfect attendance. We look forward to celebrating with everyone!

Garden News
Hello Sitton Families! Happy Autumn!
My name is Merri Whipps and I’m delighted to be entering my third year as your Garden Educator, this year with the support of the nonprofit Grow Portland. This year all K-5 classrooms as well as Head Start students will participate in monthly Garden lessons with me! I’m excited to learn and explore with all Sitton students outside.
Did you know that your child’s school is one of the 17 schools in the Grow Portland community? We collectively teach garden education to over 6,500 students including 8 Preschool classrooms, and 16 Special Education classrooms. Thanks for being part of our community!
I plan to keep edibles available in the garden all year round and support the pollinator plant environment so we continue to have a rich space for hands-on nature experiences for the children. During our first month of ‘Garden Welcome’ Lessons we enjoyed exploring the garden via scavenger hunts, learning Garden Expectations and making nature bracelets. We’ve also harvested potatoes, garlic, and popcorn, tasting crunchy green beans, peppery nasturtium, tasty tomatoes, cucumber and basil, and enormous zucchini! We’ve planted fall veggie starts and seeds of cool-weather crops, and we’re clearing beds to plant overwintering field peas and fava beans. If you want to volunteer to help with garden lessons you can Sign up here!.
Kind Regards,
Merri, merri@growportland.orgDía de los Muertos
This year, our Sitton Community will be creating an ofrenda in celebration of Día de los Muertos. This special holiday is observed every year on November 1st and 2nd as a time to remember and celebrate our loved ones who have passed away.
In the week leading up to the celebration, we will be discussing the history, purpose, and traditions of Día de los Muertos, as it is celebrated in many Latin American countries.
Classrooms will have the opportunity to visit the ofrenda and place pictures of family members who have passed away. If you would like to contribute, please send a picture of a loved one to be placed on our ofrenda starting on October 28. Make sure to include the student's name and class on the back so that we can return the photo by Tuesday, November 6th.
Thank you for participating in this meaningful celebration!
