Thursday’s Parade turned out to be the pure definition of JOY! What a beautiful community we belong to! We are so lucky to be part of a school that reflects the broad diversity within the borders of Greenwich and mirrors the diversity of America. This, along with our mosaic of races, religions, and languages, is our greatest strength. The Julian Curtiss School continues to partner with our families and community to embrace our differences and inspire the world to be a better place.

Thank you to Mr. Alexandre Coric, international photographer and former JC parent, for presenting the idea of the Inside Out Project to our school. He understands the vision of our UN Day and our school and is helping to spread that message through art. Mr. Coric, the father of Zoe Coric who now attends Central Middle School, is a true altruist who expresses and confirms his true character every day. Thank you for your vision, your time and your kindness! You have provided us with a gift of a lifetime.

A big shout out and thank you to our Inside Out Committee that has worked on this day since April: Jessie Bennett, Brenda Brush, Bob Chaney, Alexandre Coric, Basmah Harrim, LeAnn Hinkle, Jimmy Librandi, Michele Sabin, and Lucy Von Brachel. Thank you to all of the teachers and parents that each played a role in making the day and the project a success. Together we make a difference!

Greenwich Time: Parade of Nations Celebrates World Cultures

Below are some of the beautiful photos captured by Alexandre Coric during our celebration, as well as a link to a video of the speech by our special guest Mr. Nicolas Pron!

We hope that you all had a chance to view the portraits from "The Culture Within US" while they were on display outside on Thursday and Friday. The portraits were of the oldest child representing each country here at Julian Curtiss. The project was a true labor of love for our Inside Out committee, and the six months of planning and preparation came together in a breathtaking display! Below is a brief video walkthrough for those of you who may not have been able to visit. The portraits will be displayed in several different locations throughout the remainder of the school year.

Our students enjoyed music from around the world on Monday with Sirius Coyote! They brought songs from Central and South America played on some amazing handmade instruments and entertained our students and staff! Below are a couple of brief video clips of the assemblies where some of our students joined in the musical fun! Thank you to our PTA for bringing this great cultural experience to our children.

To top off our amazing UN Week celebrations, our annual International Food Tasting was a fabulous way to try all kinds of foods from different cultures around the world. There were so many delicious choices! Many thanks to Jessie Bennett, Kirsten Hennigan, and all of the parents who pitched in to make the evening such fun! Special thanks to talented musician JC alum Sylvester Pecora for providing us with great entertainment!

Our students had a fabulous time with award-winning author and illustrator Shonda McCloskey on Wednesday! They learned about her experience with the writing process and even got a fabulous souvenir for our LLC! Thank you to the JC PTA for providing such a fun and engaging experience!

CogAT test results: Check your child’s Friday Folder!

On behalf of the Chief Academic Officer for Greenwich Public Schools, Irene Parisi, Cognitive Abilities Test reports were sent home with grade 2 students on Friday, October 25.

Bonnie O’Regan, Advanced Learning Program Facilitator, will hold informational meetings about interpreting your child’s test Cognitive Abilities Test reports and the ALP placement process on Wednesday, October 30, at 9:30 AM at the Byram Library and at 7:00 PM at the Board of Education Building. The Advanced Learning Program has begun the placement process for second graders. The ALP program seeks to identify students who excel two grade levels above their current grade, demonstrate a strong motivation and love for learning, as well as perseverance when faced with challenging assignments.

Letters to parents of children who have been recommended for the evaluation phase will be emailed on Friday, October 25th.

Children may also be nominated for additional testing by their parents. The Parent Nomination Form is available on the ALP website at

El Programa de Aprendizaje Avanzado (ALP) ha empezado el proceso para determinar qué estudiantes de segundo grado participarán en el programa ALP.El programa ALP identifica a estudiantes cuyo nivel académico se sitúa dos cursos por encima del suyo, que demuestran una motivación fuerte, una gran inquietud por aprender y que perseveran cuando se enfrentan a grandes retos.

El viernes 25 de octubre se mandarán cartas de notificación a los padres cuyos hijos han sido recomendados para la fase de evaluación de ALP.

Los estudiantes también pueden ser nominados por los padres para que estos sean evaluados. It is our attempt to keep the day as routine as possible but still allow a little celebration with a “snack” not a full-on catering event! Not an easy feat at all! Children may bring their costumes to school but cannot wear them all day long. We ask that costumes be appropriate for elementary school since K-2 students can scare easily. Please follow these guidelines:

• No full face masks
• No blood
• No weapons
• No color hairspray or make-up because we are asking that students do not come to school with their costume on and we do not want them applying these items during the school day.

Please help us stay on track for instruction for most of the school day. Parents of students in grades K - 2 can come in at 1:45 to help with costumes if they wish.

Halloween is a fun time of the year, but for children with food allergies and their parents, it can be a very scary time for a very serious reason.

During this Halloween season, it is a good time to remind everyone that we are an allergy aware school and are committed to keeping all children safe. As candy and treats abound before and after Halloween, please be mindful of the foods you bring into the school for snack and lunch. Parents should read labels carefully for the most common food allergens frequently found in candy (peanuts, tree nuts, milk, wheat, eggs, soy, and sesame) and be aware of foods made in a facility that processes them. Students, please do not share food and remember to wash your hands before and after eating. Let’s remember to have fun and keep all students safe and feeling included this Halloween!

Important Note: Halloween is on Thursday this year. Sugar and lack of sleep are not a combination that makes for good students the next day. Please keep the sugar to a minimum and make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep!
