Colin Powell Academy
Principal Greeting - SY 2025
Here's to A Superb School Year!
Dear Families and Students,
Welcome back to another thrilling school year at Colin Powell Academy (CPA)! I’m excited to connect with both our returning families and those who are joining us for the first time. We’re thrilled to have over 1,500 students at our Cadet home, where helping each student reach their highest potential academically and individually is our main goal.
As I embark on my 14th year as a school administrator—10 of those with Prince George's County Public Schools—I feel truly fortunate to work alongside the incredible people in our school district who inspire and motivate us all.
At CPA, we understand that our dedicated educators play a crucial role in leading our students to success which cannot be done without your support and personal insight. Our fantastic staff is here to create a nurturing and supportive environment, ensuring that every student has the chance to thrive as a learner and citizen. Our amazing CPA team is full of passion and dedication, and they’re here to inspire and challenge our students to dream big and reach for goals they might never have thought possible!
This year, we’re excited to roll out some new courses for our 6th-8th grade scholars, including STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), NFTE (Entrepreneurship Essentials), and ASL (American Sign Language).
Our K-3 students will also have the wonderful opportunity to engage in learning through Arts in Integration, thanks to our collaboration with Maryland Arts for Learning. This initiative will enrich our teachers’ and students’ educational experiences by blending the arts into their daily lessons.
We're really excited to team up with you to enhance the connection between home and school! Your engagement is so important for our students’ success, and we’re looking forward to partnering with you all year long.
To ensure that parents are better supported this year, in response to the feedback we have received from families, a new SY 24-25 organizational structure has been created to ensure that families receive excellent customer service and shorter response times (see below). Effective [August 25th], parents are encouraged to reach out to their child's Assistant Principal as a first stop for all matters. The Assistant Principals number one goal is to ensure that your child is successful, which means that your involvement and support are critical.
I've arranged some principal chat and chew dates that aim to offer families a relaxed setting to engage with our school leadership—I hope you will consider attending. These gatherings will provide an opportunity to ask questions, share feedback, and cultivate.connections within our school community. I believe this will be a wonderful chance for us to get to know each other better and collaborate in supporting our students' success.
Principal Chat and Chew Dates :
- September 10th: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
- October 15th 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
- November 20th: 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Warm Regards,
Ms. Nina Lattimore
My Philosophy of Education
Collaborative Culture/Distributing Leadership
I believe that our school community is intellectually enriched and morally strengthened by our diversity in our voices and viewpoints. We all share unique skills and passions. Working together helps us to not only grow professionally but it also strengthens our school community. This school year we'll reintroduce student advocates who will serve and support our administration, school counselors, and teachers in the day to day operations at CPA.
Innovative Instructional Practices
Our students live in a world full of color and vitality. Our school and classrooms should provide a space that allows our youth to "own their learning" as our educators serve as facilitators for their success. I'm focused on guiding or staff to view formal assessments with a data driven lense. Through this focus our classroom instruction will be centered on our students areas of progress and enrichment.
Cultivating Community Partnerships
Successful schools value community partners. Through partnerships we find connections to help meet the needs of all learners. Developing practices that promote our social and emotional well being leads students to respect one another, their teacher, their classroom and the world around them.
