TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
April 12th 2024
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES families,
Throughout the school year, myself and several staff members visit the classroom to observe teachers. While the primary goal is to observe the teacher and provide feedback, its hard to ignore the students.
Over the last few weeks, I have been reminded how special our school is. We have some of the most inquisitive, quirky, smart, kind, and thoughtful students. They are not perfect, and I know some may act differently while I’m in the room, but It'll take it. I am there to be on task, focused, professional, but sometimes what these kids do makes me laugh, happy, and even get a little teary eyed.
I wish I knew every student personally (and I will with time), but having a student come up to me for a hug or high five (when I don’t know their name) is special.
“The reason I love kids so much is because they’re so honest, so you know right away if they like you or they don’t.” – Colin Egglesfield
Michael Singleton
Principal.

Curriculum and Testing Updates
This week students in Grades K-3 participated in the final Drop Everything and Write (DEAW) activity. All students in Grades 4-6 have completed B.E.S.T. Writing; the score release date has not been announced by FDOE at this time. Reminder that all FAST student scores for Grade 3-6 will be available via the FDOE Family Portal (https://fl-familyportal.cambiumast.com/).
On Monday, OSES students had the opportunity to view the partial solar eclipse. Students wore NASA approved glasses, made different eclipse viewers, and enjoyed the experience with peers, teachers, and parent volunteers.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
In Ms Volden’s class we had so much fun watching the solar eclipse this last Monday. Thank you so much to the parents that donated the solar eclipse glasses. They worked great! This week we have been very busy. We finished out topic 13 unit with shapes. We are moving on the topic 14, which is fractions! In science we are starting to learn about plants and animals. For social studies, we are working on the 7 continents and are creating a continents book in which the class is learning more about each continent. Students have been working hard on these, and I can’t wait to share them with you!
FIRST
We’ve had a busy week in 1st grade!
We started our week in Reading by discussing the different elements of poetry. We read a few poems that the students had heard before, and decided whether they had any rhyme, repetition or alliteration. Students had fun creating their own alliteration sentences. They were so creative! We finished the week with retelling stories and identifying story structure and text features.
At the beginning of the week, we finished our topic 12 assessment on Time and Money in Math. To engage their learning, they created their own clocks with moveable hands, and we brought out the coin manipulatives for them to practice identifying and counting. They loved pretending that they had a store, with their friends' buying items from it. We then moved into shapes! We learned about the defining and non-defining attributes of a 2D shape, sketched and composed our own 2D shapes and identified real world objects that can fit into this category.
In Social Studies, students learned about the similarities and differences between schools now and in the past. It was very comical to watch their reaction to schools in the old days. They were most surprised at the chalk board!
On Monday, we had the awesome opportunity to watch the Solar Eclipse! We made sure to talk about the safety of wearing our protective eyewear and had a few lessons to discuss what happens when the solar eclipse is occurring.
For the remainder of the week in Science, we finished Big Idea 16 on Heredity and Reproduction. The students did so well at identifying the differences between young and adult animals and plants. They now know that we do not look EXACTLY like our parents, but we do have defining characteristics to show that we are from the same family.
SECOND
Mrs. Merks class has been busy this month! In science, we are learning about the life cycle of plants. We "planted" lima beans in the window and are patiently waiting for them to germinate. To celebrate the solar eclipse event, we read a play about students preparing for the eclipse. Students completed a choice board of activities ranging from creating a party initiation for an eclipse party to researching NASA's website to learn about a space event like Cassini crashing into Saturn.
Krishang from Ms. Yeaman's class took 6th place in the OCPS chess tournament
THIRD
This week in Ms. Patel's class, we had a lot of fun learning about the solar eclipse and how the Moon and the Sun interact. We also got ready for the FAST test by doing practice math and reading tests. In math, we focused on angles and learned how to use a protractor. It was a really cool week of learning and getting ready for our tests!
FOURTH
This week in Ms. Polejes’, we had such a fun time watching the solar eclipse together! Such a great experience for all of us together.
In Math class, we are just starting to work on geometry! Remembering our different shapes and their properties. It is a great refresher with FAST coming up in a few weeks. In Science class, we are finishing up heredity and reproduction. Earlier this week, we went searching for butterflies around the classroom and discussed how they blend in and look like other animals.
It’s been a fun week of lessons and the eclipse!
FIFTH
Fifth grade had a great time at the eclipse! It was so great to see the school all together! We have been having a great time in fifth grade finishing our unit on mysteries. We learned about Nessie and Bigfoot and traced the author’s claims on whether they are real or not! This week we read a spooky mystery called “The Secret Keepers” and tried to figure out the mystery of the pocket watch our protagonist Rueben found. While we read, we made sure we discussed the story and analyzed its literary elements. Some of the elements we looked for was the conflict, the characters and the theme. In the coming weeks we will start reviewing for FAST and going over all of our standards!

SIXTH
The sixth graders, much like the other students, spent the afternoon of Monday, April 8th watching the solar eclipse. In World History, we discussed how some different ancient societies reacted to eclipses. However, we have spent most of our time focusing on the Roman Republic and Empire. Students have been drilling the similarities and differences of the Roman Republic to the United States’ government. In addition, we have discussed the Punic Wars and how the results of these conflicts have shaped our modern world.
Field Trip Permission Slips for the Florida Aquarium have been sent home with the students. Please pay and fill out the permission slips before the due date of May 3rd! What Is Cooperation?
Cooperative behavior involves:
Working together towards a common goal.
Communicating effectively.
Showing respect and kindness towards one another.
Encouraging teamwork in students is crucial in honing their life skills. By fostering an environment that celebrates inclusivity and support, we can establish a secure and inviting space where everyone feels appreciated and acknowledged. The book That Fruit is Mine. What does this book help us learn about cooperation?
I hope our teachers, staff and students can work together to make the remain days of school productive for all.
Have a great weekend!
