Elementary Math and Reading Improvements! π
We are entering year three of our elementary school staff work to overhaul our math πcurriculum and year two of targeted focus on literacy instruction π(to align with the Science of Reading research). We are seeing that students are thinking and conceptualizing math differently and the way students are learning to read has changed! It was hard work and required a lot of training and commitment from our elementary teachers, coaches, and leaders. There are so many data points to share, here are some really exciting outcomes on Forward, the Wisconsin State Assessment:
In Forward Literacy, we moved from 29.2% of students in grades 3-5 performing at or above grade level proficiency to 42% in 2024 performing at or above grade level! On the math Forward Assessment grades 3-5, we moved from 45.6% of students at or above to 49.7% at or above grade level!
Middle and High School Interventions π―
Our secondary teachers, coaches, and leaders focused intensely last year on implementing interventions for students with skill gaps. They ensured students were directed, not invited or optional to attend intervention. These plans also included incentive plans for improvement. (including students being able to waive a final exam at the HS.) We are also tremendously proud to share the outcomes of those efforts:
Whitewater Middle School
On the Forward Assessment, we moved from 31.7% of students in grades 6-8 performing at or above proficiency in ELA to 37.6% in 2024 performing at or above grade level! On the Forward Assessment in math for grades 6-8, we moved from 27.8% of students at or above grade level proficiency to 42.5% at or above!
Whitewater High School
Our students showed the highest ACT outcomes since 2018 and showed an 11% increase in our composite ACT. WHS Juniors (now seniors) achieved an average composite score of 19.1 as compared to a composite average score of their Pre-ACT, 17.2 the prior year. The 2024 state average composite score is 19.4, we are getting close! 27% of the WHS students met or exceeded three or more college readiness benchmark scoresβan 8% increase from the previous year.
Attendance Campaign β
As you are all aware, chronic absenteeism increased significantly in the aftermath of COVID-19. We initiated a district-wide Attendance Task Force to address this, last year. The task force worked on attendance procedures being consistent across the district, an attendance campaign for students and parents, and plans for intervention procedures for our students and families that struggle with attendance. This year, those efforts reduced chronic absenteeism by 10.4% district-wide! β
