Whakatauki
This week's Whakatauki is one to consider when you are voting for your Parent Representative on our Governing Board of Trustees.
Hautū are the leaders in a waka that call the time to the kaihoe/paddlers and guide the waka to travel in the direction of their vision?
It has been an enriched week with lots of exciting learning opportunities in all levels of the school together with fun and laughter. We know fun and laughter is the best medicine when times are challenging.
As the Nation prepares for the biggest industrial action in the education sector - we are all experiencing the challenge of navigating this event. Our Board of Trustees have deemed that the school will be closed for instruction Wednesday 29 May as there will not be enough supervision for children. They have also coordinated with our Plumbers to utilise this day to apply a temporary fix to an urgent water issue to avoid any further disruption to our school community. We are hoping the major work will be undertaken in the July non-contact time. We all thank you in advance for your on-going support during this time.
We are delighted to see a number of parents and one longtime serving friend and former parent to our school, putting their hands up to Govern our school.
This role is hugely important and requires time and commitment to partner with myself and the staff in providing opportunity to all in our community to be warm, safe and happy as we engage in education learning opportunities here at Inglewood Primary.
Our Board of Trustees Parent Representatives also require a community lens as we are also member of our Kahui Ako o Kohanga Moa / Inglewood Community of Learning. Our Kahui Ako goal is to 'assist with all members standing upright here, and grow good citizens.
National Strike Day
You may have heard in the news recently that the NZEI and its members, along with the PPTA (secondary teachers) voted to hold a day of strike action, to be held on Wednesday 29th May. The Inglewood Primary BOT have decided, that due to this strike action that the school will be closed on Wednesday 29th May. We know that this may be an inconvenience to families but we will not be able to provide a safe environment for your children while strike action is underway.
Please note: The BOT have taken the opportunity while this strike occurs to undertake remediation work of our water supply. As a school we cannot operate without water. The Board has chosen this day to lessen any further inconvenience to our school community. Please note the school will be closed for all staff while repairs are carried out. Thank You for your consideration and understanding.
Kind regards
Grant Kenny

Message from Taranaki District Health Board - Keeping measles out of Taranaki
Measles is a highly infectious airborne virus which affects both children and adults. Immunisation is the best protection.
Measles is very disruptive for schools. It is a severe disease and most cases need to spend several weeks off school or work because they are so sick. About one in ten needs to be hospitalised.
The first symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose and sore and watery ‘pink eyes.
This is followed by a blotchy rash.
It is most infectious just before people develop the rash. We strongly encourage our school families to ensure you are up to date with immunisations to ensure we are all protected against this serious, preventable disease.
By getting immunised we can reduce the spread of serious diseases, which benefits us all. Our priority is for people, especially children, who have not been vaccinated at all to get vaccinated.
One dose of MMR vaccine is effective in 95% of people. After two doses, more than 99% of people are protected.
Children who have not been immunised or who are immunocompromised may need to stay away from school until the risk of getting measles has passed.

Cookies on the Go! (Simone Hayward)
Here's some easy to make adaptable breakfast cookies that are oil free, dairy free and egg free. The recipe is very adaptable, using any type of nut or seeds that you have. No nuts or seeds? Just use extra oats!
Not used to cooking without eggs, oil and butter; the cookies won’t be like the traditional cookie you’re used to. They’re not crunchy and light, they are soft, deliciously chewy and satiating. The dates give them natural sweetness, so no need for any extra sugar. If you’re introducing children to these cookies for the first time and you’re cutting back sugar intakes, add half a cup of dairy free chocolate chips.
Recipe: (Makes 10 large cookies)
- 1/4 cup organic nuts or seeds (I used almonds & hazelnuts)
- 2 cups organic dates (soaked in hot water for at least 15 minutes)
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp flaxseed
- 1 1/2 cups jumbo oats (not quick oats)
Method:
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees, line a baking tray
- Boil the kettle and soak your dates in a bowl
- In a food processor or thermomix, blitz your nuts or seeds (not the flaxseed) until they’re small, but not ground and set aside
- Add the dates to the mixing bowl along with the cinnamon and vanilla. Blend until nearly smooth. You might need to scrape down the sides of the bowl a few times
- Add the oats and nuts/seeds to the dates. Blend until the oats are just mixed in, but still whole
- With damp hands shape the mixture into tablespoon size balls and flatten slightly on the tray.
- Cook on the top shelf for 12 minutes or until the cookies are golden brown and still soft.
- Remove from the oven and cook on the tray for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before storing. Otherwise dig in!
Tips:
- Use any seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds in place of nuts
- If not using any seeds, add an extra 1/2 cup of oats
- Add 1/2 cup dairy free chocolate chips for a sweeter cookie
- You can leave out the flaxseed if you don’t have it
- Make the cookies extra large and top them with ice cream, fresh fruit or chia jam for an extra boost of colour and nutrients
- Store the cookies in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or the freezer for up to 3 months
