Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
ELA – This past week, students continued reading Tuck Everlasting. Students should have completed Chapters 5-7 Mastery Check in CANVAS. If they are not at that place, they should work on their progress over the weekend. I posted the full text on CANVAS as well and it is also available on Clever-Sora. This coming week, students will continue working on writing strong claims with supporting evidence. Students should bring in wired headphones to use in class if they have them.

Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
We wrapped up the week by giving our United Nations Simulation Opening Speeches (worth two test grades – Summ B/C). Next week, we will finish speeches, debate, and vote to decide how to spend our budget to better access to education for children around the world. We will finish out the week with a movie about some students’ trips to school.
Please note – if your student is absent, they need to arrange or ask about make-up assignments. Once I have graded all assignments, I enter ‘WS’ into ASPEN if it has not been completed/turned in. If your student sees any WS assignments they have already completed, they should see me or email me.
Ms. Osman, Science
Hello scientists! This week, students wrapped up their unit on Earth’s Changing Surfaces. They applied their knowledge of plate tectonics and heat transfer and how those processes are involved with the rock cycle, types of rocks, and weathering, erosion, and deposition. Next week, we will be moving into a different earth system by understanding ocean and atmospheric currents. Students will apply their knowledge of how thermal energy from the sun unevenly heats the earth to create such currents. They will explore how land, water, and air heat at different rates during the Land and Air Lab and complete a Gizmo on convection currents.

As we move forward, we will be using devices in Science more often. Please remind your student that you support the rule that devices must be returned to their charging slots every day. While you are at it, please ask your student if more pencils or erasers are needed. We have had very generous donations for Science and yet the pencil supply can't keep up. Perhaps you find a stash of pencils under a bed? or in the bookcase? Please send in your extras!
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
MLL Beginners
Hello, all! Next week, 6th graders will take a break from ACCESS testing and will have a normal class schedule. In English Language Arts for Beginners, students will work on their reading comprehension strategies via two extensive reading assignments. They will also begin a new vocabulary study on 10 placement verbs. This work will culminate with a vocabulary quiz on Thursday, Feb. 29.
In World Geography for Beginners, students will begin their Unit 3 research project about a selected country in Asia. Students will engage in deep research about their countries and then create a digital book about this country using the Book Creator app.
In Beginning Literacy for MLLs, students have been making great progress in meeting their weekly goals for the online intervention program, System 44. They have also regularly been learning on the BrainPOP app, which allows them to practice their listening, speaking, and reading in English through interactive videos and activities. Finally, all students are now able to read leveled texts in English and they are really working on improving their reading lexile through the reading comprehension quizzes assigned for each book they read.
Mr. Reichlen, Librarian
Join the Deal Battle of the Books Team!
Come to the interest meeting on Monday, January 29th at 3:30pm in the Deal library if you are interested in participating with this year's Battle of the Books competition in May! Teams compete with other middle schools in DC by reading 8 books selected by the DC Library Association and answer questions to win awards! The team will meet once a week after school to prepare for the competition. See more information at the link below or reach out to Mr. Reichlen if you are interested and cannot attend the interest meeting.
Tardy Hall reminder
All Deal students are expected to be in class and ready to learn promptly at 8:45 AM daily. To help build strong, healthy habits and ensure that students do not miss instructional time, the 6th grade team is assigning tardy hall to students who arrive to school after 9 AM or who have established a pattern of late arrivals that are resulting in lost learning time. Students who are assigned tardy hall will stay afterschool with Ms. Watson, 6th grade dean, until 4:15 PM.
