East Hills Connection #19
EHMS Connections Newsletter #19
January 21, 2025
Dear East Hills Family,
We hope everyone enjoyed the snow and you and your family are keeping warm during this cold week!
Today we will follow the District's a 2-hour delay, tomorrow we will have the rescheduled 3-hour delay.
The quarter ends tomorrow, please encourage your child to complete any missing items or take any retest needed. We want our students to understand the content and be successful in their learning. Our teachers are overwhelmingly accommodating to help students that need any support. Please remind your child to take advantage of that support, if needed.
Starting this week, we will practice a Text Dependent Analysis as a school. Students read and respond to a grade level text. Writing is so important and taking time as a school to focus on this valuable skill is something we feel is an investment in our students.
Please see further announcements below, we have a lot going on this winter!
Stay warm,
Mr. Horvath, Mr. Podhyski and Mrs. Braun

New Year Resolution: Take the SMART Goal Challenge with Your Child
Get ready for the end of Marking Period 2 on January 22nd by taking time to reflect and review our child's schoolwork and study habits. Middle schoolers are learning to develop important skills like responsibility, time management, and self-motivation. With our guidance, they can benefit from setting SMART goals for school and life: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Each week this month we will post a new SMART challenge. Try taking on this one!
Week 1. Collaborative Goal Setting & Academic Improvment
Sit down together with your child to set academic improvement goals. This encourages ownership and self-motivation.
Focus on clear, measurable actions such as setting time to check-in and improving a grade by a certain amount of points.
SMART Goal Example:
1) "By the end of the marking period, my parent and I will have a weekly check-in to discuss my progress in school and home responsibilities."
Tip: Schedule a weekly meeting on your calendar by setting aside 15 minutes to review progress and adjust goals as needed. Weekly meetings also give you time to check the calendar for everyone's schedules, look for conflicts, and book in time for rewards.
2) "I will raise my math grade from a C to a B+ by the end of the marking period by completing all schoolwork, attending help sessions, and practicing 20 minutes of math daily."
Tip: Help your child break down the steps needed to achieve the goal, like staying on top of homework and seeking extra help.
Good luck with your new challenge and Happy New Year!

CELL PHONES!!
New for 2024-25
Summer is coming to a close and often we neglect to realize many of the changes the students will need to become accustomed to when school starts. Waking up early, preparing to catch the bus or travel to school, schoolwork, homework, and the list goes on.
One major area to consider is that your children will not have the same access to their cell phones when they become students again.
Parents, please prepare your child(ren) for the adjustment. Most parents have limitations they set for their children throughout the summer days to limit screen time. However, all of the students and you as parents need to know that we are adjusting our standards for the upcoming school year. We looked back on the level of distraction vs. usefulness cell phones have provided over the past few years and we realize the need to set a tone for the school day to be largely void of the distractions of cell phones. Here is what you should prepare your child(ren) for when they return to school:
Students may not CARRY phones in hands, pockets, etc. Cell phones must not be out at all. They must remain in bags during the school day. This means:
Students can never use cell phones in class, hallway or office without teacher/staff permission.
Students can never carry cell phones in hand in the hallway.
Students can never take cellphones to/in the lavatory.
Students can never take cell phones to the cafeteria (not in purses/lunch bags if those items are brought to the cafe).
***Smart watches have similar restricted use in all the same ways as cell phones. Smart watches can and will be collected if used inappropriately.
