Student Mass Reflections For Wednesday, September 4th
In the first reading from 1 Corinthians 3:19, we learned that Christians are not perfect. Just like the early Christians, we have things like jealousy and rivalry. We sometimes catch ourselves doing things like, “Who’s a better Christian?” No one is more perfect than another. God has made it easy for us to understand him. It is only God that is perfect and we, Children of God, should always keep that in mind.
Joan, grade 7
In today’s Gospel, we learned how God guides us. The song “Oceans” spoke of “Walking on Water,” meaning that we can push ourselves and God can push us even though we think we can't go further, God guides us through life if we just follow. Thomas said that he learned a lot from this school and even though he didn’t notice it over the years, he was becoming a changed person. This means that God wants us to take the right path into becoming a better person and learning from our mistakes.
Adelina, grade 7
Safety at Morning Drop Off at the Parish Center

Media Center News from Ms. McGillin
To help build student skills and encourage a love of reading, all SJCS students, Grades K-8th, are participating in the Sunshine State Young Reading Program. This program has three different lists of 15 grade-appropriate books, designed to engage and challenge each reader. The lists are grouped K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 and selected each year by media specialists from around the state of Florida. For every SSYRA book that students read and pass the AR test, they will receive a brag tag for that book. Students at SJCS who read 5 of the books off their grade group list will earn membership into our SJCS SSYRA club. Students in this club get to vote on which book they think should win that year’s SSYRA Award. Students who read 8 of the 15 books off their grade group list, they will get to attend a SSYRA luncheon at the end of the year! Students in K-2 are allowed to read the book with help from an adult- all other students should be reading the book independently.
Come back next week to find out about: SSYRA!

Thanks to all those parents who have already given of their time in service. It's time to document those volunteer hours in Renweb. You can find information about logging service hours in the "Resources" section at the bottom of this newsletter.
If you have any questions regarding logging of hours, Mr. Kupka is the best person to help you. Email him at mkupka@stjosephwhschool.org
Fingerprints Process for Volunteers
Please remember that there are many times throughout the school year, where parents choosing to come on campus must be fingerprint cleared through the Diocese of Orlando. This includes volunteering at special events or chaperoning field trips. The fall is always such a busy time for the diocesan fingerprint office, and clearance can take weeks depending on circumstances. If you are a new parent to SJCS, or your fingerprints have expired, we urge you to consider taking care of this requirement now! The steps for being fingerprint cleared are below.
If you have been previously fingerprinted and have questions about this, contact the office. Please do not contact the Diocese directly about this.
New Box Top Goal
Since we reached our goal of $100 in funds earned for SJCS, our new goal will be $250. Scan your receipts to help us reach this goal and all students will earn another dress down day.
This Sunday's Gospel from Mark 7:31-37
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis.
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man’s ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” —
And immediately the man’s ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
“He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
