- Ms. Doriean Matsik is moving out of state with her family, and so will be leaving her position as instructional assistant.

Art Room News, from Ms. Middleton:
Kindergartners make fun multi-media cowboy boots as part of their unit exploring the Wild West. Backgrounds were painted with the color of their choice. They then made cowboy boots out of lunch bags and lastly embellished them with drawing, string art and spurs.
Mrs. Caolo’s class had fun making clay sculptures.
Third graders worked on “complete the pictures”. Students were given a pair of illustrations. One side was glued to paper and they worked on replicating the other side. This is a great way to teach them how to really look - following line, search for details and discover negative space. They did an exceptional job with these.
Fourth graders got to see their newly fired tiles. We took group pictures with them as a thank you to send to local potter, Susan Dimm of Barn Hill Pottery, who very kindly glazed and fires our tiles for our wall mural.

A “Masterpiece” Mystery and Learning Conversation in Ms. Chieffo’s Class
Masterpiece, a mystery written by Elise Broach, is highly recommended by Ms. Chieffo’s class. Here is the description from the back of the book:
Masterpiece
Written by Elise Broach and illustrated by Kelly Murphy
Boy Meets Beetle
Marvin lives with his family under the kitchen sink in the Pompadays’ apartment. He is very much a beetle. James lives with his family in New York City. He is very much an eleven-year old boy. After James gets a pen-and-ink set for his birthday, Marvin surprises him by creating an elaborate miniature drawing. Then James ends up with all the credit, and is expected to do it again. Before they know it, the unlikely friends are caught up in an art heist that could lead them to a long-lost drawing by Albrecht Durer. Of course, James can’t go through with the plan without Marvin’s help. But can a boy take a beetle to a museum and let him recreate a master work of art without anyone knowing about it? Even more important, can he bring the beetle safely back home?
This book sparked so much curiosity in Ms. Chieffo’s third graders! They reached out to CES’s police and art experts, Sgt. Massey and Ms. Middleton, and invited them into our classroom for a conversation about artists, art museums, FBI, and tracking devices. It was fascinating to listen to Sgt. Massey and Ms. Middleton as they shared their vast knowledge. Thank you Sgt. Massey and Ms. Middleton for this experience!
