Learning About Prehistoric Paintings
Students in Mrs. Andrews' social studies classes have been studying prehistoric paintings. To help the students have a deeper understanding of this time period, students authentically recreated Paleolithic cave paintings. They did this by gathering stone age paint brushes such as sticks, feathers, moss, and grasses. They also held their paint in scallop shells and used hand held lights. The room was darkened and students painted above their heads just like the people of the Stone Age. They really enjoyed this activity!
Learning About Ancient Mesopotamia
Students in Mrs. Andrews' social studies classes have been learning about Ancient Mesopotamia and the first writing system Cuneiform. Students researched how to spell their names and practiced, but then were given clay and a stylus to experience writing just like they did over 5,000 years ago.
Music with Mrs. Dreher
In music class students learned the Irish folk dance Irish Stew (Rakes of Mallow), following AB musical form. We had fun exploring ways to circle dance with our stretchy band. 6th grade even applied tennis ball choreography to demonstrate the difference between A and B sections. Students played accompaniment parts on xylophone while their peers performed the folk dance. 6th grade focused on composing stew ingredients with rhythm building blocks and ukulele chords. Major vs minor chords were used to represent approval (major) or disapproval (minor) of ingredient choices.
3rd graders also took home recorders and practice packets for the first time on the week of 3/24/25! They have been working hard to hold the instrument correctly, using left hand on top. Please review the information letters below and please remind students to bring their recorders on their music day every other week. Mrs. Dreher looks forward to playing with everyone!

Learning About Light and Color
We made Lego rainbows and played with light and color in STEAM this month!
We reviewed the colors of the rainbow in 4th grade and built our own rainbows using Legos.
In 3rd and 5th grade, we learned about the primary colors of light and how when combined they make new colors! We explored this concept by using red, green and blue flashlights to project and mix colors and make new colors in shadows!
Peer Buddies
5th Grade Peer Buddies met this month and made slime and played games! 5th grade STEP students invited the students from Mrs. Mahan, Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Truex’s classes to hang out and get to know one another. This has become a monthly gathering now after the STEP students have been reading “Out of My Mind”. It’s a book by Sharon Draper that tells about the life of a non-verbal student with cerebral palsy from her point of view. After discussing how the main character just wants to be included in what the mainstream students are doing, they came up with the idea to have Peer Buddies! We are enjoying our time together and ok forward to doing it again in April!
Mr. Page's Art Class
What we are learning….
Each grade has been working on projects related to particular artists and their styles.
3rd grade is learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky and the use of colors to express emotions.
4th grade has learned about the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh and will be making mix media versions of his famous piece, Starry Night.
5th grade learned about Ed Ruscha and will be making word paintings using a whole new type of medium…
6th grade discussed the evolution of street art into mainstream gallery art and will be creating Keith Haring inspired posters for Earth Day and Autism Awareness.
Be sure to check instagram to check out these works in progress.
"No Taxation Without Representation"
Mrs. Kawka's class traveled back in time to December 16, 1773. We learned of the events leading up to the taxation of tea which lead to the Boston Tea Party. Students brought in a mug, sipped on tea with sugar cubes, and reviewed history which they're very much interested in as we enter The Revolutionary War. Be sure to ask them to explain "No Taxation Without Representation"!
