Hello Dorr Families,
It is my honor to share that Dorr Elementary has earned high rankings from the U.S. News and World Report for being one of the best public elementary schools. In order to be eligible for this honor, schools are assessed on two different aspects and must fall within the top 40% of Michigan public schools. The first criteria is students’ proficiency in mathematics and reading through state assessments, and the second is the socioeconomic demographics. This badge recognizes educational excellence, as the top-ranked schools are all high-achieving and are successfully preparing students for their next level of education.
Dorr Elementary was ranked 49th out of 2,633 Michigan Elementary Schools. We appreciate the support you give to our staff and students. Our partnership with parents and our community is key to the success of our students. We are humbled and grateful to accept this award.
Warmly,
Mrs. Seniura
My Child Is Sick. What Do I Do?
The cold and flu season is approaching. Dorr Elementary is already seeing an influx of sickness in the classrooms. Please help us stop the spread of these nasty viruses by following these guidelines.
- If you need to call your student in ill, it is helpful if you give a brief list of symptoms, rather than "my student is sick". Reporting symptoms helps us identify possible outbreaks.
- Please keep your student home if they have a fever. Students are welcome to return to school once they are fever free without medication for 24 hours.
- Please keep your student home if they are vomiting or have diarrhea. Students are welcome to return once they are vomit/ diarrhea free without the use of medication for 24 hours.
Attendance Questions Explained
Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to learn by 8:50am each day. Students who arrive AFTER 8:50am but BEFORE 9:05am will be marked as AM TARDY. Students who arrive AFTER 9:05am will be marked as 1/2 day AM ABSENT.
Students are expected to complete the school day at 3:50pm. Students who need to be picked up between 3:30pm and 3:49pm will be marked as PM TARDY. Students leaving BEFORE 3:30pm will be marked as 1/2 day PM ABSENT.
If your student is ill, please contact the office to report their absence. It is helpful if you report the students symptoms as it helps us identify break outs of illnesses across classrooms and grades.
Students who are absent will be coded as follows:
Unexcused absence: Students who are absent for illness or other reason, and parent has notified the office will be marked as unexcused absence. The reason for absence will be noted.
Unknown absence: Students who are absent and the office has received no communication from parent/guardian will be marked as unknown absence.
Excused absence: Students who are absent and return with a doctors note that includes the dates/times the student is to be excused, will be marked as excused absence.
Students who obtain 5 & 7 unexcused or unknown absences during the school year will receive a letter from the school bringing the absences to your attention.
Students who obtain 10 unexcused and/or unknown absences during the year will be asked to meet with the principal and may be subject to truancy. Wayland Union Schools district policy outlining attendance can be found in the student handbook.
Y5's-5th Grade Student Handbook
The Student Handbook has been updated for the 2024-2025 school year. Please take a look at our Student Handbook to familiarize yourself with our policies, procedures, and expectations. For your convenience, we have included a link directly to the handbook. This information can also be found on our website, waylandunion.org under student links.
November Student Of The Month - Teamwork
Congratulations to the following student who were nominated as Student Of The Month for November!
Distinguished Artist - Hendrix McClure
Dorr Elementary has a Distinguished Artist Program in which student
artwork is on display like an art gallery for the school year. Each year 9
students are chosen as a Distinguished Artist. The distinguished artist is a
student who is responsible in art, shows their creativity and works hard
on all projects. Ms. Corcoran chooses 3 to 4 pieces of artwork in which
the students followed directions and completed the project adding their
creativity. A committee of staff members then votes on the projects to choose the winner.
Congratulations Hendrix McClure!
Happening In The Halls
Student VIP Lounge
Students who are among the top tier in modeling respect, responsibility, and safety, in all they do were chosen for a special VIP lunch with our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Johnson. The VIP lounge was decorated and students were able to pick out some special treats to go along with their lunch. Congratulations Wildcats! Thanks for being such "Pawsome" Role Models!
