Getting Started: A Dual Degree Journey
The next batch of Proviso High Schools students and their parents got their start to college life at a special orientation meeting on May 29 at Triton College.
The students – 21 in all including 11 from Proviso Math and Science Academy and five each from Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School – are part of District 209’s Dual Degree program with Triton. In the program, the students will work toward an associate’s degree in several majors while they finish their last two years of high school. They are among students from nine area high schools in the Des Plaines Valley Region to participate in the program. They join eight Proviso students who will attend their second year in the 2025-2026 school year.
At the May 29 orientation, the students and their parents were treated to lunch while they learned the ins and outs of life at Triton. Toni Johnson, Triton’s Director of Dual Credit and Dual Enrollment Programs, explained what resources and support systems are available for students as well as what will be expected of them. They also received a tour of the main college areas including the library, advising, the tutoring center, and where to sign up for clubs and organizations on campus.
Dr. Alexander Brandon, Proviso Director of Career and Technical Education and Early College, told the students and their families that the successful students are those who regularly read their notes from class and do not rely solely on assigned homework to learn the material.
“This will not be as easy as high school,” he said. “However, if (the students) put in the work, they can be successful.”
