Message from Superintendent, Dr. Ison
Happy New Year, Spartan Families!
As we step into 2025 with renewed energy and optimism, I want to take a moment to reflect on the 3 R’s that guide our mission at Wayne Local Schools—Relationships, Rigor, and Relevance. Last month, we explored the importance of Relevance in making education meaningful and connected to students’ lives. This month, I’d like to focus on what I believe is the foundation of the 3 R’s: Relationships.
Strong relationships are the cornerstone of a successful educational experience. They create a
sense of trust, belonging, and connection that helps students and staff thrive. When students feel
supported by their teachers, peers, and community, they are more likely to engage in learning and embrace challenges with confidence. Relationships are what make our classrooms vibrant, our culture positive, and our students successful—not just in school, but in life.
Our teachers are dedicated to building meaningful connections with every student, ensuring each
child feels seen, valued, and understood. These relationships are essential for fostering academic,
social, and emotional growth. Beyond the classroom, our partnerships with families and the community play an equally vital role in shaping a supportive and nurturing environment where
all students can achieve their full potential.
Relationships also extend to our school culture. When students take pride in being Spartans,
celebrate one another’s achievements, and come together to support each other, they strengthen
the fabric of our district. This culture of mutual respect, kindness, and resilience is something we
can all take pride in—and it will stay with our students long after they leave Wayne Local Schools.
As we move through the second half of the school year, I encourage everyone—students,
families, staff, and community members—to keep strengthening the relationships that make our
schools a special place. By working together, we can ensure that every student feels the encouragement, connection, and support they need to succeed.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to Wayne Local Schools. Let’s make 2025 a year of connection, growth, and Spartan pride!
Best Wishes,
Sam Ison

District's Main Sources of Funding Explained
Understanding the financial structure of our district is essential to appreciating how we fund and sustain the programs that benefit our students. Here’s an overview of the anticipated revenue and key funding sources for Fiscal Year 2025.
Primary Revenue Sources
The district’s main source of funding comes from property taxes, which account for 64% of our revenue. This funding reflects the community’s vital role in supporting our local schools. Due to the recent property revaluation by the county auditor's office, the district expects a 14% increase in property tax revenue this school year.
Secondary Revenue Sources
State funding accounts for 24.8% of the revenue for 24-25. The state funding formula decreases state aid as property values increase, thus only a 2% increase in state funding for the 24-25 fiscal year.
Other Revenue
The remaining funds come from a variety of sources, including student fees, tuition, investment earnings, and facility rentals. These sources are smaller, but vital to the annual operating budget.
Total Anticipated Revenue
For FY25, we anticipate a total revenue of $20,049,072. These funds are carefully budgeted to prioritize our students and their learning.
A Look Back: Our Last Operating Levy
The district’s last operating levy was a renewal of a fixed-sum levy for $3,307,082, approved by voters on November 5, 2013. This renewal highlighted our community’s ongoing commitment to investing in education and enables us to maintain high-quality educational programs and services. We remain dedicated to serving the needs of our students and community.

Waynesville Seniors Gain Hands-On Experience in Orthopedic Medicine
On January 27th, Waynesville High School seniors had an opportunity to step into the world of orthopedic medicine during a bio skills lab hosted at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine. Guided by Dr. Kevin Shaw, the students explored the intricacies of knee anatomy and gained firsthand experience in surgical techniques, offering them a glimpse into the life of a physician.
Learning the Basics of Knee Anatomy
The day began with a 20-minute overview of knee anatomy led by Dr. Shaw, who explained the complex structure of this critical joint. Students learned about the ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones that make up the knee, gaining a deeper appreciation for how the body works.
Two Interactive Stations Provide Hands-On Experience
The bio skills lab was divided into two interactive stations, allowing students to practice what they learned in a real-world setting.
1. Open Dissection and Suturing Skills
At the first station, students performed open dissections on a cadaver knee. This station allowed them to see and touch the anatomical structures they had just learned about. The experience also included a suturing skills portion, where students practiced stitching techniques commonly used in surgical procedures.
2. Arthroscopy Station
The second station introduced students to arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique. Dr. Shaw demonstrated the use of arthroscopic equipment, showcasing how surgeons navigate inside joints with precision. Students even had the chance to use the equipment themselves, giving them a feel for the challenges and rewards of being a doctor.
Collaboration Makes It Possible
This invaluable experience was made possible through the collaboration and dedication of several key individuals. Waynesville Athletic Trainer Courtney Powell, Science Teacher Patrick Hardin, Career Navigator Scott Jordan, and the staff at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine all played critical roles in coordinating the event and ensuring its success. Special thanks go to Dr. Kevin Shaw for his expertise, mentorship, and passion for educating the students of Waynesville.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Medical Professionals
By stepping into the role of a surgeon, students gained valuable insights into what it takes to succeed in the medical field. This unique opportunity not only broadened their horizons but also sparked interest in careers in science and medicine.
Opportunities like this remind us of the power of hands-on learning and mentorship in shaping future professionals. Waynesville High School seniors left the bio skills lab with more than just knowledge; they left inspired, motivated, and ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
JH Students Share Ecosystem Research Findings
For the past two weeks, seventh graders in Ms. Cassie Garison’s science class have been immersed in the study of ecosystems. They explored how ecosystems are structured, identifying both abiotic and biotic factors. Students also discussed the intricate connections between food chains and food webs and the importance of biodiversity.
Each student selected an ecosystem from around the world to research, diving deep into its unique characteristics. They then brought their learning to life by creating interactive foldables to classify ecosystem components and constructing 3D models illustrating the interactions within their chosen environments.
The research experience culminated in student-led presentations, where they shared their findings with their peers; students excitedly showcased their projects, eager to see their hard work come together. Many even asked for more hands-on projects like this in the future.
“This wasn’t just another research assignment—it was a deep dive into ecology and the circle of life,” said Ms. Garison.

Community Support Needed to Continue Student Program
At the start of the school year, Waynesville Jr./Sr. High School launched an exciting new initiative to celebrate students demonstrating Spartan pride, respect, responsibility, and kindness. Freshman Carly Fodor, said, “I felt excited to do something good and be rewarded for it. It encourages me to keep doing good things.” Through the Spartan Star Cards program, teachers recognize students, making them eligible for various rewards and incentives. This program relies on the support and contributions of the Waynesville community.
Seventh Grade Teacher Nancy Lukasavage said, “We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of our parents and community members, but we still need additional contributions. With half the year behind us, we’re in need of these items:”
Snack items: chips, popcorn, snack bags
Drinks: Gatorade, soda cans
Sweet treats: candy bars, Little Debbie snack cakes
$25 gift cards for grand prize winners
To contribute, simply sign up via SignUpGenius. Donations can be dropped off at the Jr./Sr. High School office. “Thank you for your continued support in making a difference for our students," said Ms. Lukasavage. "This is a valuable program for our students."

Second Grader Birdie Nuttall’s Weather Dream Comes True
Waynesville Elementary second-grader Birdie Nuttall has always had a passion for weather, especially tornadoes. From the moment she entered WES, Birdie’s enthusiasm for meteorology has been evident to her teachers and classmates.
This year, Birdie received a birthday surprise she’ll never forget. On January 20th, her actual birthday and a day off from school, Birdie was treated to a special visit to Dayton 24/7 Now, where she got to explore the world of local news and weather forecasting.
Birdie and her family were warmly welcomed by Chief Meteorologist Natalie Walters and Erika Kabbes, who gave her a behind-the-scenes tour of the station. She even got the chance to experience what it’s like to be on the news! Joining her for this special day were her family and Principal Anna Garafolo and Assistant Principal Patrick Clark.
"We're proud to support our students’ unique passions and create unforgettable memories like these," said Mrs. Garafolo. "Congratulations, Birdie, on living out your weather dreams—we can’t wait to see where your passion takes you next!"
Helping Every Student Thrive
One of the ways the Waynesville Elementary staff is dedicated to helping every student succeed is through Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). This system allows us to monitor student progress in reading and math and provide extra help for students who need it.
Each year, students take Acadience assessments three times—in the fall, winter, and spring. These quick and effective assessments show us where students are thriving and where they might need a little extra support. For students who need additional help, we create targeted plans to support their growth and check in on their progress every two weeks to make sure they’re on the right track.
This winter, WES families received an Acadience report along with their child’s report card. This report offers an overview of a child’s progress and highlights their strengths as well as areas to work on.
“Parents are such an important part of their child’s learning journey,” says Patrick Clark, Elementary Assistant Principal. “Reading together at home, practicing math facts, and staying connected with your child’s teacher are simple ways to make a big difference.”
If you have questions about your child's Acadience report or for other tips on supporting learning at home, please contact your student's teacher.
Third Graders Turn Affirmations into Music
Elementary Music Teacher Ms. Bri Hendrickson has been talking with her third grade students about positive affirmations and helping them identify their own unique qualities. To connect this concept to music, the students are decoding different rhythms that correspond to their affirmations. These students are learning song writing skills! Each student has been putting those positive statements into their own song. Ms. Hendrickson, said, "We're still in the beginning stages, but I'm proud of everything our students are learning."

Supporting Student Well-being
Q&A with Mr. Wright, WLS Director of Student Services
Fostering a supportive and nurturing environment where learning can flourish makes all the difference for students. Helping students thrive is not just about reading and writing; it also encompasses their social and emotional well-being. WLS prioritizes mental health, builds resilience, and promotes positive connections to pave the way for students to succeed.
Three ways our school staff is focused on supporting student well-being are:
1. Strengthening PBIS (positive behavioral interventions & supports) framework
2. Addressing the need for school-based mental health services through a partnership with MindPeace Cincinnati
3. Implementing Sources of Strength Program K-12 with support from 1N5. Sources of Strength is a comprehensive, evidence-based mental health and suicide prevention program designed to empower young people and build resilience.
Let’s dive deeper into the third initiative with Kevin Wright, WLS Director of Student Services and Special Education.
Why do you think a focus on suicide prevention should be a priority?
Suicide prevention is critical because the mental health of our students directly impacts their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. By addressing these challenges early and proactively, we create a safer and more supportive environment where students feel valued and understood.
What can you share with us to raise our awareness of the importance of suicide prevention?
According to the American Psychological Association, more than 20% of teens have considered suicide.
This staggering statistic highlights the urgency of addressing mental health needs in schools. As adults, we need to recognize warning signs, encourage open communication, and seek support when needed.
What’s unique about Sources of Strength in comparison with other mental health and suicide prevention programs?
What sets Sources of Strength apart is its focus on building resilience and fostering connections among students. It’s a strength-based program that leverages the power of peer leaders to promote hope, help, and strength within the school community. Rather than focusing solely on risk factors, Sources of Strength emphasizes protective factors that can prevent crises from occurring.
Can you tell us how WLS is beginning to implement Sources of Strength in our schools?
This year, we’re training staff and students to serve as peer leaders and trusted adults within the program. These leaders will work together to develop campaigns and initiatives that promote positive messages and encourage students to support one another.

A Note from our Local Food Pantry
The volunteers and Board of The Waynesville Food Pantry would like to thank the Wayne Local Schools Community for their very generous donations to the Waynesville Spartan Food Drive in December! We were overwhelmed by the amount of donations. We feel so blessed to live in such a kind, caring, generous community!
Your donations will allow us to help so many of our neighbors who request food assistance. Unfortunately, that number keeps increasing, yet thankfully, in large part due to the Spartan Food Drive, we are able to continue to help those in need.
THANK YOU!
