THE WOODBURN SCHOOL DISTRICT PROMISE
We have officially begun the second semester of school! Thank you to students, staff, families, and the entire Woodburn community for your care and partnership. With your collaboration, we have begun to see increases in attendance. Let's continue our focus on attendance and make the second semester of school even better. Please make sure to look below for opportunities to give feedback about our calendar and opportunities to help recognize our amazing staff! Also, please don't forget to sign up for Flash Alert (directions below). With cold and possible winter type weather ahead, it is the method we use to communicate school closures and delays. Be safe and stay healthy!

January Events & Celebrations! 🎉
JUAN'S WORDS: MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Woodburn School District Community,
Last Friday our community suffered the tragic loss of a student who was hit and killed by a train. This heart breaking event may bring up questions, concerns, or fears in your child. Please take the time to check in with them. Some students may be eager to talk, while others might hesitate. If your child is reluctant, gently encourage the conversation, ask about their feelings, and accept their responses without judgment.
When answering their questions, respond directly and honestly. It is normal for children to ask the same question multiple times as they process their emotions. Be patient, and they will eventually find the understanding they need. If they focus on specific details of the loss, answer their questions truthfully, and don’t hesitate to say, “I don’t know” when appropriate. Avoid comparing death to sleep, as this can sometimes lead to fears about going to sleep. Instead, provide comfort with extra hugs, reassurance, and support.
Please also help keep children safe as they come to and from school by reviewing some important safety lessons.
Walking: Use identified walking paths, walk facing traffic, obey all traffic laws/signals, be aware of surroundings, look both ways when entering a crosswalk, wear clothes that make you easily seen by cars, share your walking path with your parents so they know, keep eyes and ears open.
Biking: Make sure bike is correctly functioning as intended (brakes, reflectors, etc.), make sure you have proper safety gear, obey all traffic laws/signals, stop at all intersections, look both ways before entering a street, ride with the flow of traffic, be aware of your surroundings, wear clothes that make you easily visible, keep eyes and ears open, use lighting at night, share your path with your parents so they know.
Rail Safety: Use designated railway crossing areas, keep eyes and ears open, be aware of your surroundings, follow all traffic laws/signals, never walk on tracks.
Student Drivers: Never use your phone while driving, avoid eating or drinking while driving, limit conversations with passengers to minimize distractions, scan the road ahead for potential hazards, maintain a safe following distance, be aware of surroundings, drive slower in bad weather, follow all traffic laws/signals, always buckle-up
Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are with the student’s family and everyone grieving this loss.
