Compass Academy: Charting A New Direction for Serving Students with Mental Health Conditions
Florence 1 Schools has a unique program that has garnered statewide attention from urban school districts, local legislators, hospital administrators, and institutions of higher learning. It’s the Compass Academy which opened its doors at the beginning of the school year.
“Florence 1 Schools is the first school district in the state to have an entire school/campus dedicated to meeting the mental health needs of the students, while simultaneously meeting their educational needs funded solely by a school district,” said Krystle Graham Florence 1 Schools Coordinator of Clinical Services. At the Midpoint: Interim Reports Issued Next Week
Interim reports will be issued Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Be sure to check your student(s) academic progress. Parents who need to schedule a conference with teachers are encouraged to call the guidance office in order to set up the appointment. Also, mark your calendars now for Parent-Teacher Conference Day which will be held on Monday, November 4th in Florence 1 Schools.

Academy Lieutenant: "Would Love to Have F1S Join Us"
The Florence Police Department is now taking applications for its Citizens Police Academy Fall 2024 class.
Purpose
The purpose of the Citizens Police Academy is to increase the understanding between the police and citizens through education. The Citizens Police Academy gives citizens the opportunity to learn about their local agency. It is not intended to make citizens into police officers, but to allow citizens to learn about police operations.
Class Topics
Class topics include: Officer Training, Patrol and Traffic Operations, Juvenile Procedures, Gang Activity and Awareness, Narcotics/Vice, Criminal Investigations, Victim Witness Advocate, Polygraph Use, Emergency Response Team, and K-9 Officers. Attendees will get to meet and learn from officers from different divisions and specialty units within the police department.
Course Start Date and Times
The course starts Tuesday, October 1st at 6:00 p.m. This is a 6-week course. Classes are scheduled for two hours on Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Citizens may apply on the police department website or by filling out the application form located at this link: (Police Academy Application Form) and returning it to Lieutenant Brian Barley (bbarley@cityofflorence.com). Fall Camp Offered During Intersession
Florence Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism will offer a Fall Camp during Florence 1's upcoming Intersession week (October 7-11, 2024). Activities will include storytelling, outside games, drawing and painting, nature field trip and s'mores making. Camp locations are Maple Park, Northwest Park, Iola Jones Park and Levy Youth Center. Racefest: An Event for Children and Families
As the community prepares for the upcoming 2024 Cookout Southern 500 Races, the Florence Convention and Visitors Bureau will present Florence Racefest at the Market, 2513 West Lucas Street in Florence on Saturday, August 31st from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Pee Dee Farmer's Market.
The event if for kids and will include an inflatable water slide, face painting, a car show, music, arts and crafts, and cozy coupe races. For more details, visitflo.com or call 843-664-0330.
This Weekend's High School Football Schedule
On the Gridiron
In Friday night football action, August 30th, South Florence will travel to Summerville; West Florence will be at Myrtle Beach, and Wilson will host Gilbert (Lexington County). Games start at 7:30 p.m.
Labor Day Holiday Observed
Florence 1 Schools and offices will be closed in observance of the Labor Day Holiday Monday, September 2, 2024. Classes will resume and offices will reopen Tuesday, September 3rd.
