RSU 57 Community Newsletter

Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community,
I’d like to begin by thanking everyone who participated in the recent community forum held on October 10, focusing on “Addressing Student Mental Health and Social-Emotional Well-Being.” The event was a tremendous success, and I am deeply grateful to all the students, family members, staff, and community members who attended. Your input and support play a crucial role in shaping how we address these important topics within our schools. For those who were unable to attend or wish to revisit the material, we have made Mr. Thurlow’s presentation slides and a video recording of the event available online. Please use the links below to access these resources and continue fostering these important conversations.
I am also excited to share some fantastic news about our Massabesic High School Golf Team, which has once again earned the Maine Principal Association’s Good Sportsmanship Award for the third consecutive year! This recognition reflects not only the team’s dedication on the course but also the respect and sportsmanship they exhibit off the course. We are incredibly proud of these students for the way they represent RSU 57. A special congratulations goes out to Coach Scott Carbone and student-athlete Emmett Carroll, who recently represented the team at the state championship. Their hard work and character set an inspiring example for all of us.
In our ongoing efforts to prioritize student safety and well-being, I’d like to inform you about a new initiative aligned with LD 1263, “An Act to Require Certain School Identification Cards to Include the Telephone Number of a Suicide and Crisis Hotline.” In the coming days, RSU 57 will be distributing stickers with crisis lifeline information to our middle and high school students. These stickers will be applied to school-issued devices, ensuring that students have quick access to essential support if they are ever in need. Additionally, the same lifeline information will be clearly posted on our district website. We believe these steps will further support the mental health and safety of our students.
Lastly, I would like to remind all students and caregivers that November 5 is a staff in-service day. On this day, there will be no school for students, as our staff will engage in important professional development aimed at enhancing the educational experience we provide. We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue working to ensure the best possible learning environment for all.
Thank you again for being such an integral part of the RSU 57 community. Together, we can continue to make our district a place where students not only achieve academically but also grow emotionally and socially.
Sincerely,
Stephen D. Marquis, PhD.
Fire Safety Week at Shapleigh Memorial
Last week, students at Shapleigh Memorial participated in Fire Safety Week! This is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about fire prevention and safety measures. This week served as an important reminder for our learners and community to prioritize fire safety at school and in their homes. By promoting education and preparedness, we hope to reduce the risk of fire-related incidents by ensuring everyone knows how to respond in emergencies. Thank you to the Shapleigh Fire Department for coming and educating our learners this past week!
MHS NJROTC Marches at Fryeburg Fair

September Model Mustang Staff Recipients!
It is with great excitement and pride that we announce the recipients of the Model Mustang Staff Award for the month of September! This award is a tribute to those outstanding individuals who embody the qualities of a true “Model Mustang”; they inspire, lead, foster positivity, persevere, and excel in all that they do. Each Model Mustang was nominated by colleagues who took the time to acknowledge and celebrate their coworkers’ exceptional contributions to our district. Their hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for the positive impact they have within RSU 57! MHS Career Fair
Calling All Businesses, Industries & Community Partners!
Massabesic High School is hosting an Annual Career Fair on October 23, 2024, from 7:30-11:30 am in the school’s gymnasium.
Our goal is to inspire the youth in our community to be Career and College ready. It is important for students to explore different career fields in a variety of interest areas or even explore options they have not yet considered. The Annual Career Fair enables students to connect with local companies and helps spread the word about your company and job openings.
We cordially invite you to be a part of this great event. If you are able to join us, you will be responsible for running a booth and discussing with students your workday and the skills and education needed to be successful in your particular career field. If you have any flyers or job postings available, this would be a great opportunity to bring them.
If you are interested in representing your business, please complete the form linked here.
Please feel free to email Marianne Stephenson if you have any questions mariannestephenson@rsu57.org.
