September 2021
A message from Career Academy Principal, Mrs. Katie Towler
We are off to a fantastic start to the new school year at the Career Academy. I continue to be impressed by the number of students who choose to explore their future career possibilities while in high school. We have many exciting improvements to our program on the horizon and I am eager to share these with you over the next few months.
This year our focus is on how we can improve our impact on students and our connections with our community. Through this newsletter you will hear about work-based learning opportunities which include job shadows, internships, and apprenticeships. You will see pictures of students engaging in special projects that impact and help our community (check out https://wbl.futurereadyiowa.gov/listings?zip=51101 and post projects if you would like student help). You will read impact statements from our student ambassadors who will share with you how the programs at the Career Academy have made a difference in their lives and why it matters. Our hope is that as you read this newsletter every month you are inspired by what you see.
If you have questions, ideas for how we can improve, or you would like to get involved with what we do, reach out. We would love to hear from you. As always, thank you for partnering with us in your student's education.

A message from Career Academy School Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
WITCC Degrees: The Career Academy allows students to work towards certificates, diplomas and 2-year associate degrees. Some pathways allow students to earn to these degrees while in high school. If you have questions about diplomas, certifications and associate degrees check with your pathway teachers or see Mr. Lucas in the counseling office.

Transcript Requests: Seniors, part of the application process for colleges is submitting an official transcript to the colleges you are applying to. In order to submit your transcripts you will need to log in to your Navigator account and click the ‘My Transcript Request” tab. See your counselor with questions.
JROTC News
Cadets participating in the Sioux City JROTC program are encouraged to apply for Private Pilot Scholarships.
Headquarters Air Force Junior ROTC is proud to announce that it has opened the application window for the 2022 Air Force Chief of Staff Private Pilot Scholarship Program commonly called AFJROTC Flight Academy. The Flight Academy scholarship program is an Air Force level initiative in collaboration with the commercial aviation industry to address the national civilian and military pilot shortage. The private pilot scholarship program allows JROTC cadets who are aspiring young aviators to get their Private Pilot’s Certification (a $20,000 value) and a college transcript, at no cost, during an eight-week summer course at partner universities. Those who participate do not incur a military commitment. Last summer, over 300 cadets from across the country received the scholarship with about 80% successfully earning their Private Pilot Certificate. Cadets are competitively selected based on Aviation Qualification Test scores, endorsements, physical fitness, extracurricular and aviation experience. Motivated JROTC cadets with an interest in aviation and will be at least 17 years old by July 2022 are encouraged to contact their JROTC instructor to begin the application process.

District News
- Student Birthdays
We love celebrating students’ birthdays. To help us keep your child’s celebration safe for everyone, treats for birthdays should be store purchased, individually wrapped items. Also, due to Covid-19, parents or guardians are not allowed into our building. Your child’s teacher will assist with distributing birthday treats as needed.
- Your Child’s Attendance Is Vital
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance. We need your assistance to reduce absenteeism and help your student reach their highest potential. If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, please let us know. We want to partner with you to build a habit of regular attendance and help your child succeed.
- School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. Each year, our school has fire, tornado, and intruder drills to ensure our students and staff are prepared for potential emergencies.
If an emergency should occur, we will notify you through our Blackboard messaging system. The system will call every phone number listed for your child, providing details about the emergency and directions for you on where and when to pick up your child if necessary. For more information on our safety processes, visit our website at https://www.siouxcityschools.org/parents/safety/.
- Your Voice Is Needed (Graphic is attached)
We are looking for volunteers to join the Sioux City Community School District’s Grassroots Advocacy Committee. As a volunteer, you will receive email updates about important legislative events that could impact public education. All we ask is that you take the information you receive and contact our legislators to let your voice be heard in support of public education. We will provide tips on how you can contact our legislators. There is very little time commitment on your part and no meetings to attend.
Interested? Please contact our office today at 712-279-6667 to join.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
