The Importance of Attendance

As January comes to a close, I wanted to remind you all of the importance of attendance and being on time for school each day. Check out this image below:

First... a celebration!

Westwood has decreased it's rate of chronic absenteeism by 9% since this time last year! That means that roughly 45 students have improved their attendance since this same time last year.

What is chronic absenteeism?

Any students with more than 10 days of absence in a school year falls under the category of chronically absent. This includes any tardy greater than 30 minutes in a day.

The minutes matter!

Thank you for doing your part to help your student arrive on time each day for school. Each minute counts! It doesn't take a researcher to tell you that our students struggle when they miss time at school.

📅 Westwood Elementary has a minimum day on February 5

• Wednesday, February 5th is a minimum day for Westwood students
• AM & PM TK/Kinder Arrival at 8:15am and Dismiss at 12:05pm
• BOTH the AM and PM classes will arrive at 8:15am and dismiss at 12:05pm
• 1st-3rd Grade Dismiss at 12:30pm
• 4th-6th Grade Dismiss at 12:35pm

📅 Friday, February 7 and Monday, February 17 are holidays and there will be no school.

We are excited to inform you that your children have recently completed reading and math diagnostics through i-Ready, an adaptive assessment program by Curriculum Associates. These diagnostics are designed to identify your child's strengths and areas for growth in these crucial subjects. We believe that this valuable data will help us tailor our instructional approach to better support your child's academic journey.

This flyer will provide you with detailed instructions on how to navigate and interpret the i-Ready diagnostic results. Your active involvement in this process is greatly appreciated and will contribute to your child's educational success.

As a safety reminder, when picking up or dropping off your student, please use our drop-off loop (the staff parking lot is not for student drop-off) and pull as far forward as possible when in line with your vehicle. This supports a smooth drop-off and pick-up process.

🚗 Parents should stay in their vehicles and pull up to the student drop-off zone during this time. Please do not leave a vehicle unattended in the drop-off loop at any time. If you need help, wave down a staff member and we will be happy to assist you. Thank you for doing your part to keep our students safe.

Additionally, please be sure that your students have the proper car seats, booster seats, or seatbelts as required by California State Law. Let us know if you need help or resources to keep your student safe. 💺✅

We are excited to announce that this year, families are able to verify their child's elementary school teacher and secondary school class schedule through our online data confirmation process. Starting on July 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM, parents who have completed the online data confirmation will be able to access this information. We encourage all parents to complete the online data confirmation process by following the instructions in the flyer below.

This important step will allow you to update your child's emergency contact info while also helping to support our school site with additional funding!
