HTHS Engineering NASA Hunch Project
Two HT Engineering Academy teams have been working hard to solve problems for NASA, and they recently presented their solutions. Sam Brooks, Jacob Mullinax, and Elliott Greene are trying to solve the problem of how to provide medical care in space. Their project concentrates on how IVs would work in space in micro gravity. Their design is a centrifuge to separate the air and saline along with a piston pump that controls the flow rate of the saline. Garrett Reese is investigating how bamboo could be grown in space to filter out carbon dioxide and also be harvested to produce furniture and other building materials. His design includes a dome that would house the bamboo. His investigation included growing bamboo in a soil that resembled the regolith on the moon. We are so proud of the amount of time and work these students have put in on solving their problems from NASA.
We are happy to announce that the team of Sam Brooks, Jacob Mullinax, and Elliott Greene was chosen from teams across the nation to present their project at the Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston, Texas. Our students will join with other finalists to meet with NASA engineers and personnel as they share their winning project. To make it to the finals, they had to pass both preliminary and critical design reviews through Zoom interviews with NASA representatives. Sam, Jacob, and Elliott impressed the judges with their project, a device that allows IVs to work in the micro gravity of space. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!
Magnolia Rocks Their Socks on World Down Syndrome Day
According to the Down Syndrome Alabama website, "Chromosomes look like pairs of socks! So, on World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate by wearing silly, mismatched socks in honor of someone who has Down syndrome." Magnolia rocked their socks in support of Zac and for World Down Syndrome Day, March 21st! Thank you to Zac for giving everyone stickers to wear in support of Down syndrome awareness on this special day.
Class Vending Machine Teaches Life Lessons
Mrs. O'Dell's Kindergarten class at Paine Elementary has been utilizing a vending machine as a behavior management system as well as a learning tool. Students receive fake pennies and dimes for making good choices, being a good friend, helping others, etc. After a couple of weeks, students will count their money and decide if they want to spend it and get a prize. If students choose to spend their money, they will exchange their fake coins for real quarters, and buy an item from the vending machine. Some students choose to save their money, so they can buy higher priced items the next time they go to the machine. The prizes consist of snacks, candy and toys. Through this experience, not only are students learning about good behavior and making good choices, but they are learning the value of money, saving versus spending, patience, counting by 1’s and 10’s, addition, subtraction and number sense.
Congratulations to February's Students of the Month! These students were nominated for their exemplary behavior, dedication to academics, demonstrating leadership qualities, and having a positive attitude.
Congratulations to the following students:
Selah Jones
Keller Boone
Chloe Williams
Arkeem Marshall
Clayton Howell

Cahaba's "Finding Nemo" Production a Swimming Success!
The Cahaba’s musical theater group delighted audiences with three nightly performances of "Finding Nemo Kids," transporting viewers into the depths of the ocean with their enchanting rendition. The stage design, crafted with care by a dedicated group of students from the enrichment program "Set Design," created a stunning underwater scene that brought the story to life. Teachers Tina Fortenberry, Tessa Mann, and Lauren Bone provided guidance with the music, choreography, and artwork. A special thank you goes to assistant director Sherrie Forehand for her help in this underwater adventure. Together, these teachers and students’ collective dedication and creativity made the production of "Finding Nemo" a truly unforgettable experience.

Kelly McGough Highlights TCS Literary Success
Kelly McGough, our very own Accountability and Literacy Specialist, took the stage at the Literacy Reimagined Conference at the University of South Alabama, March 6-8! In her session, "The Positive Impacts of the Alabama Literacy Act in Trussville City Schools," Kelly shared insights and successes with a national audience of administrators, teachers, reading coaches, and literacy experts. This is a testament to the incredible work being done in our schools to empower and enrich our students' literacy journey. Two members of the Alabama School Board of Education attended Kelly’s session: Dr. Jackie Zeiger and Dr. Tonya Chestnut. They were quite impressed with the laser-focused work being done in Trussville City Schools as a result of the implementation of the law. Kelly was also joined by her team of academic coaches, Jennifer Peters, Angie Seeley and Christi Watts. A few of the sessions that they were able to learn more about were meeting the needs of English learners, data analysis, and the importance of teaching morphology in all grades. Cheers to Kelly for elevating our literacy efforts on the national and state stage!
