June is just around the corner and we are headed into the stretch run for the 2017-18 school year. A lot of great activities have taken place at Medford since our last newsletter so please be sure to scroll through and see all the wonderful pictures and articles.

For our parent's of senior students, graduation information will be coming out in the next few weeks. Mrs. Bouchard will be meeting with our seniors to discuss different graduation items as we begin the planning process for this ceremony.

Rowan College at Burlington County students earned distinction at this year’s Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, which featured a mathematics competition with top math students from both two and four-year schools in the region at Rowan College at Burlington County’s Mount Laurel Campus.

16-year old Liam Doherty, of Mount Laurel, tied the record for the highest an RCBC student has ever placed in the individual portion of the competition. He placed ninth out of 77 students. In addition, he received an Outstanding Student Talk Award for his research presentation on the Physical Applications of Fourier Analysis during the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference poster session.

Doherty will be receiving his high school diploma from Burlington County Institute of Technology this spring and is already working full-time at Radwell International as an electronics technician. He earned a scholarship to attend Rowan University and will start his junior year at the university this fall. His goal is to complete his master's in math by 20 years old, eventually earn a doctorate, and work in scientific research.

Along with his teammates, Doherty and RCBC students Anna Wilson, of Shamong, and Sean Heffernan, of Southampton, won Best Team from a Two-Year College. Overall, the team ranked 14th out of 28. RCBC students have won this award twice in the past three years.

RCBC’s other teams had admirable showings as well. The team of Gaspare Carollo, of Marlton, and Daniel Kellaway, of Burlington Township, who also placed 16th in the individual competition, placed second among two-year schools and ranked 16th overall. Margaret Doyle, of Marlton, Cheyanne Kelly, of Burlington City, and Simran Kaur, of Willingboro, placed third among two-year schools and ranked 22nd overall.

The undergraduate conference was part of the Joint Spring Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America’s New Jersey Section and the Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges. It was held at RCBC’s Mount Laurel Campus for the first time and included three keynote addresses, a panel discussion, a workshop, an undergraduate poster session, two undergraduate oral presentation sessions, two special contributed sessions, and the New Jersey Undergraduate Mathematics Competition.

Congratulations to the cast of "Who Will Carry the Word" on being nominated for Outstanding Achievement by an Acting Ensemble in a Drama and Outstanding Production of Innovation and Invention at this year's Theatre Night Awards. A special congratulations to Rob Klimowski for his second consecutive award for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design.

Course selections for the 2017-18 school year took place during the month of April. Please review your son or daughter’s courses and contact their counselor with any questions. In most situations, counselors suggest that students go for the challenge, but do not overwhelm themselves to the point where coursework suffers, and they are unable to maintain satisfactory grades. So, plan ahead. When it comes to academics, create a tentative sequence of courses that will develop in scope and depth over one's time in high school. At the same time, determine whether the schedule of courses for the coming school year considers all the different expectations of time; including class and co‐curricular demands, voluntary service, sports and work expectations.

In order to apply for financial aid, most colleges and universities require the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) which should be submitted as soon after January 1, 2018 as possible. Since each college has a different deadline for financial aid, you are encouraged to submit our form online for more rapid response. If you do not have all your information available, you can estimate your income based on last year’s figures and update your submission when the form is returned to you for verification. The top students in the spring semester art classes earned their spot on the field trip to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Students were led on an engaging tour, discussing and analyzing the prestigious works of American art followed by the incredible opportunity to draw from real life the cast sculptures, just as the PAFA college students do. Placed within the various rooms in the museum, students experienced an immersive and memorable experience outside the classroom walls.

BCIT-Medford offers a wide range of student activity organizations. We recommend and encourage all students to become involved in at least one club/organization. On March 5th, BCIT Medford Yearbook club attended the Josten's Renaissance event at Washington Township High School. We listened to motivational speaker Mike Smith talk about his concept of "Find Your Grind", encouraging students to follow their passions and create their own original paths to success. Everyone walked away with something inspirational to bring back to our school.

Interact Club held a drive for a variety of goods to donate to the Burlington County Animal Shelter. We received food, treats, new toys and used clothes that we were able to refurbish into fun and vibrant dog toys! By cutting the old shirts into strips of fabric after school, we were able to knot and braid them into beautiful sturdy gifts for our fur friends over at the shelter. Interact went to PAWS farm in Mt. Laurel to volunteer and help where we could. Students got right into it shoveling pens, cleaning cases, restocking straw and other various tasks we were assigned. Our students get to see first hand what it takes to run such a large facility with such a variety of animals for the community to enjoy. It was hard work but very rewarding as you can see in the pictures of the kids in action.
