Mid-Summer Family Update

Dear Tubman Families,
This will be a fun week at Tubman!
On Monday, we will celebrate the 100th day of school. All students are invited to dress up as a 100 year old. No slippers, please.
On Friday, we will celebrate Valentine's Day. Caregivers are invited to attend class parties and donate snacks. Doors will open at 2:10 pm for caregivers. Our parties are from 2:30-3:00. Individuals younger than 18 years old are not able to attend this event.

Workshop for Siblings of Children with Disabilities
Car Seat Safety
Our goal is to ensure that the children of Montgomery County are properly secured in car seats and seat belts while traveling. The inspection stations are sponsored by the Montgomery County Fire Rescue and SAFE KIDS Montgomery County. Montgomery County Car Seat Inspection Stations are for Montgomery County Residents only.

Our in-person car seat appointments are held during the following times:
Takoma Park (Fire Station 2 located at 7201 Carroll Avenue)
- 2nd and 4th Thursday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
- 3rd Saturday of the month from 8 am to noon
Germantown (Fire Station 34 located at 20633 Boland Farm Road)
- 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from 8 am to noon
- 1st Wednesday of the month from 8 am to noon
Substance Use Resources
Overdose Prevention
Montgomery County offers periodic free trainings on the use of Naloxone, a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
The Maryland Behavioral Health Administration provides information on how to obtain Naloxone and gives instructions for use.
The State of Maryland has also created a toolkit with links, videos, graphics and other elements that businesses, public agencies and other organizations can use to educate others about the use of Naloxone.
Screening/Assessment/Referrals
The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) offers a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services offers screening and assessment services for children and adolescents (SASCA).
Montgomery County also offers mental health/substance abuse screening and referrals and access to behavioral health services (ACCESS Team).

Montgomery County Recreation is Hiring
Montgomery County Recreation is beginning their hiring for 2025 summer programming. If you have family members 16 years old and up, visit the Montgomery County Recreation website for more information and to apply. Full-time, year-round positions are also available.
Tutoring
MCPS offers free virtual tutoring sessions through Stepping Stone Tutoring and the Montgomery County Public Libraries. Stepping Stone Tutoring offers free 30-minute weekly sessions. Montgomery County Public Libraries offers live online help everyday from 2-11 PM. Visit the websites for more information.
Montgomery County Groceries Program
The MC Groceries Program aims to help families access fresh and shelf-stable food items through a convenient online shopping experience. Families can place their orders online and have their groceries delivered or picked up through a partnership with Instacart Fresh Funds. Eligible households may receive $100 in benefits per month for each child 0-18 years old, up to $400.
Who can participate in this program?
To be predetermined as eligible for this program, households must:
Reside in Montgomery County
Have at least one child under the age of 18
Not receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Have incomes below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (e.g., $124,000/year for a household of 4)

4-H is the largest national positive youth development organization that is delivered at the Maryland state level by University of Maryland Extension. Their goal is to help children ages 5-18 reach their full potential by giving everyone the ability to explore their passions, learn new skills, give back to their community, and help them find the place where they belong.
