HONORING MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR
Value For the Month - Unity
SO WE, THOUGH MANY. ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST AND INDIVIDUALLY PARTS OF ONE ANOTHER.
ROMANS 12:5
Each month of the school year is aligned to a particular value that will be shared in each newsletter and in your child's classroom. For the month of January, we will be focusing on unity. Unity is an understanding that we are all one in Christ and that what we do to one another affects the entire Body.
Principal's Corner
Hoping that you and yours enjoyed a blissful and peaceful Christmas, celebrating the gifts this year has brought, and are looking forward to all those that 2025 has in store. The students and teachers enjoyed being back at school and catching up about all we did during the holidays. However, with the many viruses and illnesses that accompany the winter months, please be mindful that if your child is showing symptoms of illness, please keep them at home until symptoms subside. Thank you for helping us keep our school community healthy and safe! We look forward to the amazing things that will be happening this second semester!
Important note: SBES does not close in February for a mid-winter break. Students are expected to attend school throughout February.
Some important notes for the upcoming few weeks of school includes:
1) It is imperative that all children arrive on time to school daily. Please be sure to reference the arrival map and logistics section of this newsletter for more information. Please be mindful that if you need to pick up your child early, you must do so by 2:15PM with advance notice to the office. Early pick-up after 2:15PM is highly un-encouraged, unless it is an emergency, due to the proximity in time to dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
2) As we approach the colder months and head into cold/flu season, please be mindful of our student absence policy. Students should not return to school until they are 24-hours symptom free and are without fever reducing medication. Thank you for helping to help our school community healthy and safe!
3) We would like to invite prospective PK3/4 parents to our building on Wednesday, January 15th, to tour and learn more about our Kindergarten program! Please see the flyer that was sent home to all students and is linked below (in the Early Childhood section of this newsletter) to register. Spaces are limited so be sure to register today. Our kindergarten teachers and students look forward to meeting you!
4) Thursday, January 16th is a FREE Barnabas Spirit Wear Dress Down Day for ALL students! Break out your best maroon, gold and black and show off your school spirit!
5) As we prepare to end the second quarter on January 24th, and distribute report cards shortly thereafter, it is imperative that tuition accounts are made current and any outstanding lunch balances are settled. As our tuition policy and regulations state, families with outstanding balances on their account/ missed payments, may not continue to attend school nor will they receive access to their child's report card. Thank you for your cooperation.
Additionally, as we prepare for electronic report card distribution for all K-8 students, please note that the portal will close for parent/guardian viewing on January 21st, 2025. Please note that when report cards are released in February, only families without outstanding tuition balances will be able to access the portal.
6) Please note that all NYC Pre-K students, under the age of 5 by December 31, 2025, will need to have a current flu vaccine on file. It is important to note that students will not be able to attend classes after the December 31st deadline until proof of vaccination is received.
7) Winter MAP testing, which began on this week for all K-8 students, will continue next week. Please be sure to utilize the memo and schedule that was backpacked with all students, and is attached here, for more information.
8) All Grade 3 to 8 students will take a Religion mid-year assessment on Friday, January 24th. Please reach out to your child's respective teacher for more information.
9) Our next event sponsored by our HSA, our Winter Wonderland Penny Social, will be held on Saturday, January 25th, from 7PM to 10PM! Bid on amazing items (stay tuned for sneak peeks soon 👀) , enjoy a festive atmosphere with family and friends of our amazing school community, and see if luck is on your side! 🛍️🍷 Whether you’re here for the raffles, the community, or the memories, there’s something for everyone. This means children born in 2021 are eligible for pre-K for the fall, and those born in 2022 will be eligible for 3-K. Please be sure to use code 11XASX when applying online at www.myschools.nyc.

11) We will once again be selling World's Finest Chocolate! We are very happy to bring back this student/parent favorite! World's Finest Chocolate is a wonderful opportunity to easily fundraise for our school!
