Welcome and gratitude
Dear TFS Families,
As the holiday season approaches, we at TFS want to take a moment to celebrate the rich diversity that makes our school community so special. Whether you are lighting candles for Hanukkah, exchanging gifts during Christmas, observing Kwanzaa traditions, reflecting during the New Year, or celebrating in your own unique way, this season is a time for joy, connection, and gratitude. We wish each of you a season filled with peace, love, and cherished moments with loved ones. Together, we embrace the values of kindness, understanding, and inclusivity that unite us all. Happy Holidays to every member of our school family! Julie and Brooke

3rd part of our Literacy Learning Series- Fluency
How do I support my child's reading learning at home? Focus on Fluency
What is Fluency and why is it important?
Many families ask, "How can I help my child with learning at home?" Let’s start with reading:
Look at your child’s i-Ready or Acadience reports, or talk to their teacher. Find out what they’re learning and what they might need extra help with.
Remember, reading has different parts that all work together, like strands in a rope. These parts are important to becoming a good reader (see Scarborough’s Rope above).
Last time in "Hawks Happenings," we talked about helping your child with phonics (the rules of sounds and letters) for kids in grades K-3.
This week, we’re focusing on fluency, which means reading smoothly and with understanding. It’s something we practice in school in grades K-4.
Amazing Second Graders
Managing Frustration - Steps we are teaching at TFS through Second Step-Try it at home
- Identify “Stop” and “Name your feeling” as a way to begin to calm down
- Demonstrate saying “Stop” and naming feelings in response to scenarios
- Feelings vary in strength.
- Feelings that are strong need to be managed.
- Saying “Stop” and naming your feelings are ways to begin to calm down.

Wit and Wisdom K update
This week, we started Module 2 of Wit and Wisdom, all about The Farm! We learned the difference between storybooks (fun stories) and informational books (books that teach us facts).
Using an informational book called Farm Animals, we practiced finding the main topic (what the book is mostly about) and the key details (important facts that support the main topic).
We also discovered that people don’t just use books to share information—they can use podcasts and recordings, too! The kindergarteners had fun recording themselves reading parts of a poem with strong, confident voices.
Thank you to our families for supporting our Giving Tree for 27 families
