Mrs. Winmill's Reading Corner
January Reading Corner with Mrs. Winmill
January is always a wonderful month! It is the beginning of a new year. It is a time where people are hopefully rested from Winter Break. In the library world, January is awards season. This is when the American Library Association announces which books from the past year deserve the distinction of receiving that coveted gold seal. This announcement will be made on January 27, 2025. I am anxiously awaiting the results!
I want to give a quick review of the wonderful resource on our library’s Destiny Discover website. Students have access to the ABDO digital reference library, three different Culture Gram sites, EBSCO, Encyclopedia Britannica, Nat Geo Kids, Sora, Teaching Books, and virtual tours to many famous sites around the world. As a quick reminder, Sora is an app where students can access digital books from the FUSD libraries as well as the Alameda County Library. Students were given a tutorial on how to access books in Sora in October and can hopefully remember how to. If not, please help and guide them through the log-in process. Students will need to know their Clever credentials or have their Clever badge.
Our students have checked out over 11,500 books for the school year so far! Great job!
Take care and keep reading!
Kristen Winmill
Home Lunch Dropoff
Home lunches brought after your student has started school must be dropped off by 10:45 am to the cart outside the office. Your student's lunch should be clearly labeled with first name, last name, and room number. We highly encourage you to teach your child to be responsible and bring their own lunch daily if they are bringing a home lunch.
Counselor's Corner
Hello Bulldog Families,
Welcome back! I hope you had a restful break and enjoyed some quality time with your loved ones. This month at Hirsch, we’ll be focusing on developing a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can grow through dedication, effort, and learning from mistakes. We’ll be helping students understand that challenges are opportunities for growth and that perseverance is key to success.
Throughout the month, we’ll explore ways to build a growth mindset, embrace challenges, and view setbacks as a natural part of the learning process. We encourage you to support this at home by reinforcing the importance of effort, resilience, and maintaining a positive attitude when facing challenges.
Thank you for your continued support!
Warmly,
Ms. Hernandez
Study Trip Chaperones/ Volunteers
All volunteers at Hirsch Elementary must sign in and out in the office, must wear a volunteer badge at all times, and must follow all site-specific protocols.
All study trip and intramural sport volunteers (ie. drivers) must submit an application through CiviCore.

Additional requirements (via CiviCore application):
- Volunteers who are transporting students (ie. study trips, sporting events) must submit proof of insurance through CiviCore.
- Volunteers who are independently supervising students must also undergo fingerprinting and a background check.
- Study trip chaperones and intramural sport volunteers drivers are required to submit a application through CiviCore even if they are only transporting their own student.
