A Colloquy with Ms. Goodrich
Students' Needs
Harvest Greetings, Parents & Guardians!
Finding balance in a child can be an overwhelming thought as there are many theories regarding how to care for children and their healthy development. One model that I find to be easily understandable is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Psychologist Abraham Maslow introduced this model as he believed that humans are born with a will to be what they want to be. In order to achieve this goal, there are needs that must be fulfilled. These needs are Physiological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem and Self-Actualization. These needs build upon one another, and help a child evolve; physiological needs must be met in order to build safety needs and so on. Each need must be satisfied, in turn, starting with the first, which deals with the most obvious needs for survival itself.
There have been times in my education career where I have had a student struggling to learn because they couldn't keep their eyes open. I would always allow them to lie down and sleep in my classroom. Sometimes a 15-20 minute power nap was the golden ticket and other times, it would be a two-hour nap for them. Either way, the child would always wake up and be ready to get to work, and grateful for the grace and time that was given to them.
I know all of you parents and guardians are amazing with your kids. I am not complaining that we have any issues here at school, but I do want to you to know that the teachers, staff and I here at PGES have your back and are willing to help at any time.
Thank you for your continued support of our students, school, and district. I look forward to seeing you at all upcoming events.
Cheers to Success at PGES!
