Counselor's Corner
Conflict vs. Bullying
During our Guidance Lessons in the classroom for this month, we learned differences between Conflict and Bullying, and skills and steps we can take to resolve conflict or handle arguments. It’s not easy at times speaking up and letting our friends, classmates, bus mates, or any other student know that we don’t like how we are being treated or feel uncomfortable. In those situations, our first line of defense is our own voice. Having the skill to use our “big voice”, which means having the bravery and assertiveness to communicate our limits and boundaries, is a lifelong skill. We also learned that we don’t have the power to control our environment, but we do have the power to control how we react towards our triggers and challenging situations. We also talked about shifting our attention from the problem to a solution, and how when our attention is focused on the problem, we are most likely not open to finding a solution. When we possess the power to focus our attention on what we really want, it is easier to have the ability to set limits and boundaries we consider appropriate, safe, and permissible. The skills and steps I mentioned earlier to resolve conflict are:
1. Willingness: Ask for willingness to solve the conflict in a different way.
2. S.T.A.R. (Smile, take a deep breath, And Relax.): We take deep belly breath to bring oxygen to our brain.
3. Wishing Well: Wishing each other well helps access the Prefrontal lobe and keeps our attention on the solution.
4. Focusing on the goal: 1,2, 3, let’s do it.
5. Using helpful words: In this step, children may need coaching from an adult to use helpful words. Children who perceive themselves as the victim speak using the phrase, “ I don’t like it when you______. Next time do _______.” The important part of this section is focusing on the solution, on how we want to be treated instead. The response from the aggressive child is, “Ok, I can do that.”
6. Connecting with a physical connection: It can be a fist bump or high five. This connection is a symbol of the conflict being solved.
We learned that if a situation doesn’t improve after using our “big voice”, the second line of defense is to tell the teacher and, ultimately, me (Counselor) and/or an administrator.

Standards Based Grading Updates
Klein ISD has made changes to the Standards Based Grading guidelines for this school year. Previously, progress was graded with a 1/2/3 score based on quarterly expectations. This year, students will be graded on a 1/2/3/4 scale and based on end of the year expectations. Families will see more 1s and 2s than were seen previously as the district has shifted towards assessing with end of the year expectations in mind.
More information on the district's Standards Based Grading policies can be found here: https://www.kleinisd.net/teaching-learning/curriculum-design-delivery/standards-based-grading

Birthday Treats
Birthday treats are encouraged to be purchased from our school cafeteria. No outside food and/or treats are allowed for birthday student and/or classmates.
When it comes to birthday treats for students, our cafeteria managers need at least 2 weeks’ notice to ensure they have enough time to order the treats that you want for your student. This also gives time to the nurses to check the allergies of all the students in the class. If you have more questions about the process, please reach out to the campus kitchen for more information. For more information, please visit our Nutrition and Food services by clicking here.
We also have more options for Birthday surprises. Please see our flyer below and be sure to fill out the form with your information AND pay using this LINK.
