PTO NEWS & NOTES
The PTO has been hard at work preparing for a fun year ahead. As you already know, it takes a village to raise our children. Becoming involved with the PTO is a great way to stay connected with your teachers, your friends, and your children. Whether you donate your time and energy, your talents, or you donate financially, all contributions are noticed and appreciated.
You should have received your PTO Membership form in your child's first day packet. Please return this form at your earliest convenience so our Directory committee can begin work compiling data. Volunteer forms will be coming home next week.
Please follow our private Facebook group, "Montgomery Elementary PTO" to learn about upcoming events and see photos of your children having fun experiences at school.
Finally, don't forget about our first PTO meeting on Friday, August 25 at 9:30 am in the cafeteria. This is a great time to catch up with friends, meet new families, and learn about the exciting year ahead. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Free babysitting is also offered for your little ones.
If you have any questions, please contact PTO President, Lori Drasnin, at mtpto@sycamoreschools.org.
SOLAR ECLIPSE
Dear Sycamore Families,
On Monday, August 21, a rare total solar eclipse will be visible during the school day. The eclipse will occur in our area beginning around 1:00 p.m. and ending around 3:50 p.m. with nearly 91% of the sun covered by around 2:30 p.m. Sycamore Community Schools will use this scientific event as a teachable moment for our students while maintaining their safety.
While we truly appreciate the significance of this rare scientific event, the safety and security of our students is one of our utmost priorities. During an eclipse, the sun's UV radiation is incredibly powerful and has the potential to severely burn the retina, causing temporary or even permanent blind spots in one's vision. According to the American Optometric Association, no one should look directly at a solar eclipse without specialized eye protection. Regular sunglasses are not safe to view the eclipse.
In order to ensure the safety of our elementary students, our teachers will engage students in age-appropriate indoor classroom activities centered on the science behind this phenomenon. Your student(s) will be able to observe the solar eclipse via a NASA live stream from the safety of their classroom. All PE classes and recess will be held indoors on Monday afternoon.
Families who choose to remove their student(s) from school on Monday, August 21, to participate in parent supervised activities around this event will be permitted to do so. The absence will be counted as an excused absence.
Because this event will occur near dismissal time, we will remind students of precautions related to the event and the importance of following bus rules. We encourage you to have a discussion with your student about the eclipse, when it will happen, and how to observe this exciting event safely. The attached fact sheet from NASA contains great information for students of all ages.
We appreciate your understanding and assistance with all aspects of this event.
