Secondary Update - 19th July 2024
Dear CEC families
And that’s a wrap for the 2023-2024 academic year! This final week has been filled with opportunities including our range of on site activities, off site day trips and our Year 9 residential as part of our activities week, Year 10 work experience our Year 6 show (Year 6 has got talent) and Year 6 graduation, followed by the #Crantastic quiz of the year.
As we finish the academic year, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on their growth and the relationships they have made. Here is a short 1 min 30 sec video highlighting some of the great opportunities from the final half term: https://shorturl.at/T9GGH
We are so proud of all our pupils and their achievements both academically and pastorally. Please make sure you take time to enjoy the summer break together as a family and take the opportunity to reflect on the previous year.
In September, pupils will return on:
Wednesday 4th September - Reception, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 11 only
Thursday 5th September - Nursery, pre-school and all Primary and Secondary year groups.
Have a wonderful summer break, and stay safe.

Internet Safety for our Children and Young People – Quora Website
Quora allows users to search and access a wide array of content without the need to create an account. This feature raises substantial concerns regarding internet safety for children and young people. The absence of an age-verification step means that minors can inadvertently stumble upon content that is inappropriate for their age group and the lack of a mandatory account creation eliminates a crucial barrier that could prevent young people from being exposed to harmful material.
The platform hosts a plethora of topics, some of which are not suitable for young audiences, and the open nature of the website along with its high ranking on search engines, makes it all too easy for young people to access such material.
Vigilance in monitoring children’s internet usage is more crucial than ever, and while the internet can be an educational and entertaining resource, it is essential to be aware of the platforms children are using and the content they are exposed to.

Sporting Update
Thank you for your continued support throughout this year's PE program, including Core PE, Sports Day, and fixtures. We truly appreciate your encouragement and dedication to your child's physical education.
We're thrilled by the record number of students opting for the GCSE level PE option this year! It's a testament to the pupils' engagement and the exciting opportunities we offer in PE.
The PE department is always looking for innovative ways to provide the best possible learning experiences for our students. With this goal in mind, we've carefully considered and chosen the Pearson BTEC Award in Sport as the new qualification for next year, replacing the OCR Cambridge National in Sports Studies.
Why the BTEC Award in Sport?
The BTEC Award in Sport offers several advantages for our students:
- Strong balance of assessments: Similar to the Sports Studies course, it incorporates coursework, exams, and practical assessments. However, the BTEC Award allows for a wider range of practical sports to be assessed, catering to more students' strengths and interests.
- Enhanced practical focus: The BTEC Award prioritises hands-on learning and skill development in various sports. This provides valuable practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
- Career-oriented learning: The BTEC Award has a stronger focus on careers in sport. This could be beneficial for students interested in exploring sports-related pathways after their studies.
We believe the BTEC Award in Sport aligns perfectly with our commitment to delivering a well-rounded and engaging PE program. It allows us to cater to individual student interests, strengthen practical skills, and offer valuable insights into potential sports-related careers.

CEC Careers
Do you work for a business who is invested in future careers? Do you enjoy speaking with young people and igniting a spark? Is the thought of copious amounts of tea and biscuits a deal breaker? Well look no further! We are really excited to announce that we are hosting our annual careers fair on Wednesday 13th November and this year we want to be bigger than ever. Please share this flyer with any business contacts you may have and email careers@cranbrook.education if you are able to be a part of finding your future workforce.
Anti social behaviour in the community
We have been made aware of a small number of youths, some who attend CEC, causing anti-social behaviour in the community. Firstly, we would like to praise the majority of our pupils and other Cranbrook youths who demonstrate the values of pride and kindness. Please remember, these are the majority.
However, for those who do not demonstrate our values and who are being anti-social and breaking the law, please report them and their actions to the police either by calling 999 or reporting via the Devon and Cornwall Police online 101 service here: https://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/
How we helped settle over 100 refugee pupils
Recruiting 1 new volunteer has the potential to create an additional 8 spaces for young people in the area to join our Cadet programme and help support our local youth offer to young people in the area, so we’re really eager to promote these roles to support more young people & the local community in making them first aid competent and confident!
Would love to hear your thoughts!
Community pharmacy strategy for Devon
Community pharmacy makes up one of the four pillars of the primary care system in England, along with general practice, optical services and dentistry. It is arguably most well-known as a dispenser and retailer of medicines, but its role is in fact much broader and includes other NHS and publicly funded services.
Community pharmacies can be found in many high street locations, in supermarkets or attached to doctors’ surgeries. There are also a range of online community pharmacies.
There has been a great deal of change in community pharmacies, the services they provide and how they are funded. In Devon we currently have 202 community pharmacies.
NHS Devon is now responsible for the commissioning of community pharmacy services and to best serve the Devon population, we are in the process of writing a community pharmacy strategy.
To help understand how pharmacies are used now and what we need for the future, we would appreciate if you could complete this survey.
If you need help to complete this survey or would like to request another format, please contact v.mitchell7@nhs.net.
If you wish to know more about community pharmacies and the work that we are doing, please visit the NHS Devon Community Pharmacy webpage.
Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Move More Cranbrook
Move More Cranbrook is the Sport England funded grants programme for Cranbrook. They are currently running their local active lives survey which you may have seen before. They do this every year and it’s really important that as many Cranbrook residents take part as possible.
The information gathered from the survey is used to tell us how active you are and whether the things that the programme has funded in Cranbrook are working. This survey is also the chance for Cranbrook residents to have their say about what sort of things they’d like to do to help them to be active in the future. It doesn’t matter whether you do no activity or a lot - all responses are anonymous but very, very helpful.
The survey takes about ten minutes to complete and can be accessed online here: ECC014 LAL 2024 Online_Cranbrook (snapsurveys.com)
Paper copies are also available in reception.
Thank you so much.
