A Message From Mrs. Penick, SHMS Principal
Welcome back, and Happy New Year! We have such an exciting and engaging 2nd semester planned for our students. Winter is here, and we have several coats and hoodies in our lost and found area. Please encourage your child to take a look if they are missing one. If needed, we will communicate through social media, REMIND, and One Call voice and e-mail about weather updates and closures. I will admit it: one good snow day would make me very happy:) Serving your kiddos is a huge Blessing! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have a question, concern, or a compliment:) Thank you for your support and for sharing your child with us! 706-778-7121 or dpenick@habershamschools.com

Counselor's Corner
Hello Parents,
I am Mandee Davis, the school counselor at SHMS. Kind people are my favorite people, and I believe in spreading love everywhere you go!
I encourage you to discuss your child's experiences and challenges and celebrate their accomplishments. If you do not yet have access to PowerSchool, please reach out, and I will help set up your account.
As we continue through the winter months and cold weather is upon us please reach out to me & let me know if your student is in need of a warm coat/jacket.
Taking care of yourself and your loved ones may seem like a fundamental aspect of daily life. However, we often fail to consider the implications of doing so. Numerous studies indicate that self-care is vital to our well-being. Here are some self-care tips:
1. Eat well
2. Get outside
3. Exercise
4. Practice mindfulness
5. Express gratitude
6. Limit screen time
7. Stay connected
8. Don’t neglect your sleep schedule
9. Be kind to yourself
10. Make time for yourself
We’re in this together! As your child’s school counselor, I support you and your child. Feel free to reach out if you have any concerns or need resources. I can be reached by phone at 706-778-7121 or e-mail at mcdavis@habershamschools.com.
Media Center & Technology
Hello from the Media Center!
We are enjoying having students in the media center this year! We provide a wide variety of books for students to choose from to meet their individual needs and interests. We also provide technology assistance to students. We look forward to working with our SHMS students to help them become knowledgeable users of media and technology. Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader goal for the third nine weeks is to complete 2 AR books - fiction and nonfiction - and earn a passing score on the corresponding AR quizzes. Students who meet this goal will earn a prize at the end of the nine weeks. Each Destination team will also earn points based on the percentage of students in their Destination who meet the goal.
Instructional Coach
Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! As we enter 2025, I am optimistic and excited about the opportunities ahead. January marks a fresh start and the chance to renew our focus on student growth and development.
There are only about 65 instructional days before students begin taking the Georgia Milestones Assessment. Please make it a priority for your child to be at school daily.
Your involvement is key to your child's success. Here are a few ways you can support our initiatives at home:
- Engage in Conversations: Discuss what your child is learning and encourage them to share their thoughts and experiences.
- Promote Reading: Encourage regular reading habits to enhance literacy and comprehension skills.
- Stay Informed: Keep up with school communications and participate in school events whenever possible.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Let's make 2025 a remarkable year for our students' growth and achievement.
If you have questions about your child's academic progress, please do not hesitate to reach out. I am here to help.
Kasey Nichols
SHMS, Instructional Coach
