Reenvisioning Our Elementary Schools
We are excited to share that we are in the beginning stages of a comprehensive look at our elementary schools to ensure the best educational experience for our students. Following preliminary discussions, our Board has expressed interest in exploring the development of 18-section schools to improve opportunities for all students while ensuring a more consistent and effective use of our resources.
This aims to bring several benefits to our school community, including:
- Equitable Opportunities: Ensuring every student has access to the same high-quality education.
- More Consistent Class Sizes: Maintaining balanced class sizes across all grades.
- Maximum Building Efficiency: Making the best use of our school buildings.
- Standardized District-Wide Cost: Streamlining our budget per student across the district.
- More Consistent Staffing and Scheduling: Improving the stability of our teaching staff and schedules.
- Increased Collaboration: Encouraging more teamwork among teachers.
- Efficient Use of Support Staff: Making the most of our support staff resources.
- Dedicated Specials Teachers: Providing consistent Art, Music, and P.E. instruction.
To help us achieve these goals, we’re considering a few key concepts:
- Paired Schools: This approach would balance the total number of sections and class sizes by pairing two elementary schools. One school would house preschool through 2nd grade, and another would house 3rd through 5th grade students.
- Academy Schools: These are specialized public schools that offer unique programs to attract a diverse student body. Possible focuses include Performing Arts, World Languages/Language Immersion, Leadership, and STEM. Academy schools would help us create 18-section buildings, which could be established in underutilized schools near other elementary locations.
- Early Childhood Learning Centers: Dedicated to early childhood education, these centers would serve three and four-year-olds, providing extended hours and centralized locations. We’re considering up to three centers, one in each feeder pattern: Coralville, Iowa City, and North Liberty. Locations could be developed by repurposing existing underutilized elementary buildings.
The Board has just begun discussing this topic. For more details, view the presentations from the July 23, 2024, and August 27, 2024, board meetings or visit our Reenvisioning Our Elementary Schools webpage for updates.
Our next steps this school year include:
- Forming a committee to explore future elementary options.
- Creating subgroups to focus on academy schools, early childhood centers, and paired schools.
- Developing detailed timelines for each subgroup.
- Gathering community feedback.
- Researching and visiting established academy schools and early childhood centers.
- Providing regular updates to the Board and the community.
We’re committed to keeping you informed and engaged throughout this exploration process. Your input is crucial as we move forward, so please stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to share your thoughts.
Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Guidance
As you may be aware, last week’s (week of August 26) heat warnings led us to adjust our athletic practices for safety. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), Iowa High School Music Association (IHSMA), and Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA), under the guidance of the IA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, have approved the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) as the recommended measurement tool. The WBGT measures heat stress by considering factors like temperature, humidity, and sunlight.
Using the WBGT indoors and outdoors throughout the year is recommended when the temperature is above 80°F. We’ll measure the WBGT every 30 minutes during activities, monitor it throughout events, and adjust practices as needed. We will also have an emergency action plan for exertional heat illness and monitor at-risk athletes closely. This ensures the safety of our students while complying with state guidelines.
Our Athletic Trainers and our Athletic Directors regularly communicate with our coaches about potential cancellations or modifications to practices and events.
For more information on our inclement weather guidelines, please visit https://www.iowacityschools.org/students-families/weather.
Get to Know Securly: Safer Online Experience for Your Student
Now that the new school year is rolling, we want to remind you again about Securly. This web filtering tool allows parents to monitor and restrict their children’s internet activity, ensuring safer online experiences.
Our students’ Chromebooks are filtered both on and off the school’s network. On-campus devices are subject to the same content filtering policies as all our internet-connected devices. Off-campus, the Securly service blocks explicit or dangerous content as defined by federal law.
With Securly, you can view your child’s internet activity and set up additional controls for off-campus use. Parents receive weekly email notifications with internet activity reports. If you’re not receiving these emails, please get in touch with your student’s school office to verify that the correct email address is listed in Infinite Campus.
Access this Parent Guide for step-by-step guidance on using Securly.
Parents can utilize the Securly Home app to adjust the settings for their child’s online activity. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store and offers several features, including:
Pause the Internet: Control internet access with the tap of a finger.
Offline Schedules: Set device-free family time.
Live Activity Feed: Get real-time updates.
Push Notifications: Receive alerts for flagged activities.
Internet Rules: Easily set internet rules for your home.
If you have questions about accessing your Securly parent account, please contact your child's school for assistance.
Thank you for partnering with us in our commitment to keep our students safe online.
High School Athletics Attendance Guidelines
With the school year underway, the excitement around high school athletics is building! We know these events are a big draw for our community, so here’s a quick reminder about some important guidelines for student attendance. These rules help keep things safe and fun for everyone.
Ticketing for events this year will once again be cashless. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets through their high school’s Bound site.
Middle School Students:
- An adult must accompany middle school students to enter the game.
- Middle school students must have their school ID to enter the game.
- Middle school students must sit in the designated “Middle School” section unless sitting with their parents.
High School Students:
- High school students must have their school ID to enter the game.
- High school students are encouraged to sit/stand in the high school student section.
All Students:
- Please leave bags and backpacks at home.
- We encourage positive and respectful behavior from all attendees.
- Help us maintain safety by not throwing objects or any projectiles onto the field/court or in the stands.
- Enjoy the game without using prohibited items (artificial noisemakers, unauthorized signs, etc.).
- We encourage all students to stay in the stands.
Special Note:
Only students from the home team and their feeder schools can attend games, except for intra-district matchups. During intra-district games, attendance is limited to students from the participating schools and their feeder schools. Visiting students must sit on the visitor’s side.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in following these guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Updated School Attendance Information
Before the start of the school year, we shared information with you about our updated school attendance guidelines based on new state regulations. Since then, we have received additional guidance from the State of Iowa. We want to provide more information about our approach this year, including the state-mandated changes, particularly regarding absence exceptions and the related Infinite Campus attendance codes.
Some absences are exempt from these new guidelines, so it’s important to provide specific details when reporting your child’s absence. The following absence types will not count towards student absenteeism and will be coded as excused in Infinite Campus:
- Absences related to illness or medical appointment
- After a student reaches the equivalent of eight (8) days of absence related to illness or medical appointments, parents will be required to provide documentation for the medical absence(s) to continue to be considered excused. Absences may be taken in hourly segments.
- Families are encouraged to provide documentation to the school for ongoing health concerns so we can proactively work with your family to best serve your student.
- Absences related to a family medical emergency.
- Absences while attending religious services or receiving religious instruction.
- Absences excused for sufficient reason by any court of record or judge.
- Absences related to an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that affects attendance.
- Absences related to a Section 504 plan under the Federal Rehabilitation Act that affects attendance.
Due to the new State guidance, any absence that does not fall into one of the above categories will appear as unexcused in Infinite Campus and will count toward student absenteeism. As a reminder, our primary goal is for students to be in school daily and to confirm their safety with a parent or guardian if they are absent.
State Attendance Requirements:
The Iowa Department of Education has implemented strict guidance that requires schools to address absenteeism. As part of this, schools will notify guardians when a student has missed 5%, 10%, and 15% of days each grading period. Based on State Law, schools must also notify the county attorney when a student is absent 10% of the days in a grading period. For more details, please visit the updated Attendance Page on our District website.
Reporting Absences:
If your child will be absent, please notify your school’s attendance office before the start of the school day. You can do this by creating an Absence Request in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or by calling the school attendance office. If we do not hear from you, the school will reach out to confirm your student’s safety and ensure you are aware of their absence.
Important note: In the Attendance section of the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, you will see your child's total number of excused and unexcused absences. Following state requirements, ‘excused’ indicates absences that are exempt from state reporting requirements, and ‘unexcused’ indicates absences that the state requires us to categorize as non-exempt.
Consistent school attendance is essential for your child's learning and development. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these new guidelines.

National Merit Semifinalist
On September 11, 2024 officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists, which is less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered next spring. Being named a National Merit Semifinalist is a tremendous individual accomplishment, and this year we are proud to congratulate our two Semifinalists from Liberty, Tyler Schepanski and Elaina McDonald.
Students are selected as Semifinalists based on how they perform on the PSAT/NMSQT. This test is offered at Liberty on Tuesday, October 22 for 11th grade students. This spring the counseling office will also send out details for interested 10th grade students who would like to take the PSAT before their junior year. If any junior students have not registered yet, you can register for the PSAT here. The exam costs $20 and can be paid in My School Bucks. Students who qualify for free lunch are not required to pay for the exam, and assistance with having the exam fee waived or assistance with general questions may be directed to Kate Pruess and Troy Bergmann.
On Track Fall Kick-Off to College Planning Week is September 16-19!
ICAN, the Bureau of Iowa College Aid, and ISCA are kicking off the new academic year with our Fall On Track College Planning Week, a week of virtual events to help families plan.

ICAN has brought together colleges and universities, as well as school counselors and current college students to have panel discussions by grade-level. Students and parents will be able to ask questions and hear from experts and current college students on their next steps.
Encourage your students and parents to attend the evening session that fits their grade. Each panel discussion will focus on tips and steps during the year each grade should focus on to prepare for life after high school.

Cooper is currently in remission but had to give up playing the sports he loved for almost 3 years due to Lymphoblastic T Cell Leukemia. They are an incredible local organization who have helped so many in our area battling breast cancer and increasing awareness through education. Since 2017, the Liberty Volleyball Program has raised over $15,000 for their cause, and we would love to continue that with a great effort this year.
While ordering shirts is fun, we would also love to see as many of you as possible wearing pink in the stands at our Pink Out Match against Western Dubuque on Tuesday 10/1.
