Annular Solar Eclipse Events in October
The physics department and astronomy club are eager to announce two upcoming events celebrating the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023.
Solar Eclipse Lecture: We are excited to welcome Dr. Alex Young to Loyola on October 11 at 6 p.m. in Knott Hall B03 to give a lecture about the upcoming eclipse. Dr. Young is the Associate Director for Science in the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, studying space weather in our universe. In this role, he oversees and coordinates science communication in the Goddard Heliophysics Science and the Heliophysics Divisions at NASA Headquarters. His research background includes high-energy astrophysics, astrostatistics, and data analytics.
Annular Solar Eclipse: On October 14, the day of the solar eclipse. The physics department as well as the astronomy and physics clubs will meet on the quad to observe the event. Eclipse glasses, gifted by NASA, and pinhole cameras made by the astronomy club will be provided. The eclipse will begin at 12:01 p.m. Baltimore will see a little less than 30% of the sun obstructed, so as the eclipse is about to hit its peak, all will venture inside to Knott Hall B03 to watch a NASA livestream showing the full annulus from one of the sites in the path. All are welcome. Feel free to bring lunches as the total event will be over two hours long and mostly spent on the quad. In case of inclement weather (full cloud cover), we will be in KH-B03 the entire time. We hope to see you there!
The Launch of a New STEM DEIJ Resources Through LNDL
In AY2022-23, NAS faculty worked with LNDL staff to expand the list of STEM library holdings related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice and to organize existing and new holdings into a resource guide for faculty. While long overdue, these efforts will aid in faculty imagining new ways to engage students with their discipline, support the expansion of the Diversity-Justice course requirement into major-level courses in NAS departments, and broaden discussions of ways of belonging in STEM. To access these recourses use the following Link.
How to Access the LNDL Lightboard
- A Lightboard Recording Studio is available for content development and Zoom sessions in the Loyola Notre Dame Library. A lightboard is a transparent whiteboard made for video creation. The lightboard is made of glass with internal lighting to make the writing glow. A lightboard allows a presenter to write and draw while maintaining eye contact to deliver their message in a natural and engaging way. The video is filmed through the glass and mirrored so the orientation appears correct to the viewer. Explore the uses, reserve the Lightboard Recording Studio room, and create engaging instruction sessions!
Loyola University, a New Member of the Maryland Tech Council (MTC)
During spring 2023, Loyola University Maryland embraced an institutional membership with the Maryland Tech Council in response to the increasing interest in Biohealth and Biotechnology within our NAS programs. This membership serves as a valuable gateway to connect with industry professionals who are spearheading innovation and economic growth in Maryland. For those interested, we encourage you to follow MTC on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Loyola's members can leverage this partnership to access MTC resources, build stronger connections with businesses and industries such as BioHub Maryland, access MTC events, explore the MTC Job Board, possible internship opportunities, and more.
