CORRECTED: Summer Programs Update
Dear staff and families,
***In an earlier message, we neglected to list Kellogg Middle School as an air-conditioned summer learning site. Summer programming will take place at Kellogg tomorrow, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9.
As we mentioned in our previous message, we have been closely monitoring the local forecast in advance of this week’s summer programming. The current forecast predicts temperatures in the hundreds on both Monday and Tuesday.
At such extreme temperatures, it can be very difficult to keep our non-air conditioned buildings cool and safe for staff and students. We also have to consider the fact that many of the buses being used by our summer programs do not have air conditioning, and that a large number of students are scheduled to remain at their assigned summer learning sites late into the afternoon when the heat is likely to be at its most severe.
Out of an abundance of caution, we are canceling Summer Acceleration Academy (SAA) programming at all non-air conditioned sites on Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9. (The only SAA program that will be in session on those days is at Faubion K-8.)
Programming will continue as scheduled on Monday and Tuesday in buildings equipped with air conditioning. Those programs include:
Summer Scholars
Leap Into Ninth Grade
SAA at Faubion K-8
Select childcare and SUN programs
ESY at Grant High School
The air conditioned sites are:
Faubion K-8
Franklin High School
Grant High School
Kellogg Middle School
McDaniel High School
Roosevelt High School
All contracted childcare, SUN programming, and ESY programming at non-air conditioned sites is also canceled on Monday and Tuesday, and PPS-sponsored outdoor programs are canceled as well. (Athletics will use their discretion about canceling practices based on OSAA guidelines.)
Please reach out to your student’s teacher or their summer learning site leader with any questions. We will be in touch Tuesday with an update about Wednesday’s programming.
Sincerely,
Dan Jung, Chief Operating Officer
Joe Crelier, Director of Risk Management
