NMS Update 10.13.2024
Northfield Middle School 24 -25
Family Conferences - Thursday, October 24
Middle school families:
We have listened to our families who continue to fill out our district surveys and brought back a couple of days of in-person walk-in style individual conferences.
For those of you who are new to walk-in style conferences, this means that families can attend anytime during the set conference time and meet with any of their students' teachers. Teachers are asked to keep conferences to no more than 10 minutes. Families will wait their turn outside of the classroom to meet with a teacher. If you feel that you will need more than 10 minutes for a conference, please reach out to your student's counselor or teacher to set up a time on another day.
Our first conference date is on Thursday, October 24 from 3:30-7:30 and the second date is Tuesday, March 18 from 3:30-7:30. If you are in need of an interpreter, please contact Jen Henriksen in the main office at 507-663-0651 or by email jhenriksen@northfieldschools.org.

Spelling Bee

SUBJECT: Register your child for the Northfield Middle School spelling bee program by November 1, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
All Northfield Middle School students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in this year’s District Spelling Bee. This year, we are hosting the district spelling bee earlier to give our champions more time to study for regionals in the new year. Your child received with this letter a packet of words to study. I also recommend downloading the Word Club app for free for a fun way to study.
The first step for your child to participate in the spelling bee is to email Mrs. Holland at cholland@northfieldschools.org. In the email include the following information: your child’s name, grade level, your preferred email addresses, phone number, your name(s).
Students will compete at the District Spelling Bee on November 21st at 6:00 pm. The Spelling Bee will be held in the middle school auditorium. Your child’s family is welcome to come watch.
The top two student champions will then move on to represent Northfield Middle School in the next level of the Rochester regional spelling bee program, which also may include online tests in lieu of in-person spelling bee events. The third place speller will act as an alternative in the event that one of the others can not attend.
Remember, the first step to spelling bee participation is to email Mrs. Holland by November 1st.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions about our school spelling bee program. I look forward to having your child compete to represent our school!
Sincerely,
Cara Holland, Spelling Bee Advisor

Tutoring Hotline
Tutoring Hotline is a volunteer program that matches Carleton volunteers with Rice County students of all ages in need of free, one-on-one academic assistance in any subject. Our program supports students who already have a set curriculum; our tutors are not equipped to assign new content. Approved tutors sign up for specific tutoring requests depending on their academic interests and availability and will meet with students for about one hour, once a week in a public location or via Zoom. Tutoring sessions are individualized to the student’s needs and may include review of concepts learned in school, preparation for upcoming tests, help with homework, etc.
Jersey Mike's Grand Opening & NMS Fundraiser
The owner of the Jersey Mike's that is opening in Northfield reached out and would like to do a fundraiser to support Northfield Middle School during their grand opening!
Jersey Mike's will provide us with promotional cards to distribute to families during the week of conferences. The card will indicate if that if you donate $3 or more to NMS, you will receive a free sub. NMS will receive 100% of the donations. We will have cards available for parents during the week and night of conferences in the main office.
Jersey Mike's is currently anticipating a grand opening on 10/23. The fundraiser will run Wednesday-Sunday that week (10/23 - 10/27).
