02/28/2025

Principal's Message
OK! Almost spring and then summer will soon be here. Promise! Testing season begins soon and seniors time at KHS is winding down.
As the Winter Sports season wraps up, I want to highlight some of the outstanding results our student athletes accomplished.
Congrats to both girls and boys basketball teams who made the tournament and had really successful winning seasons. Indoor track and field, and swim and Dive both participated in states last week and had great showings. Also both the Girls and Boys swim teams won the MPA sportsmanship awards, which is fantastic!!! Cheering made a good run at states with their highest finish ever and Wrestling had a good post season run with several wrestlers participating at states. Moose Keys qualified for New England's. Ski team competed at the state championships with several members of our team finishing in really well. Finally, the boys Hockey team had a great win over Brunswick earlier this week and face off against Gorham (the lesser Rams) on Saturday at 7pm at Troubh Arena in Portland. #GOBLUERAMS
Hey Look! Willow Knowles was recognized as a finalist in the Maine Poetry Out Loud competition! Congratulations Willow, and GOOD LUCK! She will be will take the stage at the Poetry Out Loud State Finals on March 3 at 5 p.m. at the Waterville Opera House!
We're hosting a fantastic Career and College EXPO on March 5th from 9:00-1:30 at KHS. It's a great opportunity to meet representatives from over fifty organizations that can help students with life after high school.
Remember that KHS will be participating in the MYHIS survey on March 6th in an extended 2nd block. We'll send out more information early next week.
Our KHS cast and crew will be traveling to the Regional Drama Festival at Thornton Academy for Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th to perform their adapted one-act production of Silent Sky. Kennebunk students will be taking the stage on Friday, March 7th at 8:30pm for friends, family, and community members who want to attend. This student-led production has worked incredibly hard on the show from start to finish, and we cannot wait to see what great things they will accomplish. The top 2 schools of the 10 performing at this regional event will advance to compete at the state level later in March. Let's wish these students GOOD LUCK! ****Please be advised that this event is electronic entry -- tickets will be bought on site, credit/debit only.
Seniors, remember we're launching the Senior Project for this year. Please see below for specific information about the opportunity. Please remember that there are strict eligibility requirements that include having 40 Community Service hours completed (the completion of these hours is also a graduation requirement at KHS).
Thanks, as always, to the KHS Appreciation Committee for their Kindness Connect Four day! They brought in Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows and challenged students to do acts of kindness. It was a great day. Cindy Perez won the drawing for a gift basket by connecting four acts of kindness and submitting her game cared. For the staff, Ricky Klatt won the basket!
Finally, we're beginning our course registration process for next year. Be on the lookout for an email from Ms. Bisson with more information.
Peace,
Scott Tombleson (He/Him/His - What is this?)

Maine’s Top Student Poets Take the Stage for Poetry Out Loud’s 20th Anniversary State Finals
WATERVILLE, MAINE – As Poetry Out Loud celebrates its 20th anniversary, Maine’s most talented high school students will take the stage at the Poetry Out Loud State Finals on March 3 at 5 p.m. at the Waterville Opera House. This milestone year honors two decades of inspiring students across the country to explore poetry through recitation, building confidence, public speaking skills, and a lifelong appreciation for literature.
Poetry Out Loud—a national program presented in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission, Maine Humanities Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation—has engaged more than 4.4 million students nationwide since its inception in 2005. Participants select and recite works from a curated anthology of over 1,200 poems, using their voices and interpretations to bring powerful works to life.
This year, 11 outstanding student poets from across Maine have advanced through school and regional competitions to compete for the state title. They are:
- Lilah Chibuye – Brewer High School
- Pendo Dawe – Maine Coast Waldorf School
- Aspen Gauthier – Oak Hill High School
- Willow Knowles – Kennebunk High School
- Rose Lehane-Tureen – Cheverus High School
- Stella Martinelli – Erskine Academy
- Abigail McCrillis – Gorham High School
- Mercedes Plaud – Representing Northern Maine
- Lyra Ricciardone – Morse High School
- Aaron Soosman – Carrabec High School
- Isaac Wright – Mt. Ararat High School
The Maine State Champion will receive a $200 prize and advance to the National Finals in Washington, D.C., where they will compete for $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends. The state champion’s school will receive $500 to support poetry materials, while the first runner-up will be awarded $100, with $200 for their school. The Poetry Foundation administers all monetary prizes and travel arrangements for national finalists.
This free and public event will also be livestreamed by Portland Media Center on the Maine Arts Commission Facebook page, with a final produced broadcast available later in the year.
Celebrating Poetry at the Hall of Flags
The 20th-anniversary celebration of Poetry Out Loud continues on April 4 at 1 p.m. with a special Poetry Out Loud event at the Hall of Flags in the Maine State House. This gathering will honor all student participants, educators, and supporters who have contributed to the program’s success over the years. Attendees will experience recitations from finalists and hear reflections on how Poetry Out Loud has impacted students across Maine and beyond.
