A Monthly Glimpse into all Things MERMS (May 2024)
Please Help: June Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser
In early May, Noelle Lambert, founder of the Born to Run Foundation, visited MERMS to share her story of overcoming unthinkable tragedy. She faced it head on with courage, resilience, and persistence and went on to achieve remarkable athletic successes. Students, faculty, and staff were captivated as she spoke of her experiences and shared her message of hope and determination. You could hear a pin drop in the auditorium for the entire 40-minute presentation, which was a first for us.
The Born to Run Foundation will be the recipient of 50% of the proceeds raised during our June 3rd walk-a-thon fundraiser.
Windrush Farm needs us too!
Windrush Farm will receive the other half of the proceeds we collect during our June 3rd walk-a-thon. Windrush provides quality equine-assisted services for children and adults facing physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR PLEDGES!
Congratulations, Mrs. Provost!
At the end of the school year, Mrs. Provost will head to Essex Elementary to take on the role of principal! We are so happy for her, but a little sad for us. All in all, the Essex community and MERSD is the real winner!
Thank you, Mrs. Provost. We love you, and we'll miss you.
Spring Concert
Thank you for your many years as a dedicated MERMS music teacher and band director, Mr. Janack, and welcome to leadership! We know you will be a firm and empathetic adult for our students and a collaborative partner to our faculty, staff, and administration. How lucky are we!
Middle School Band, Grades 6 - 8
Thank you, Friends of Manchester Essex Performing Arts!
Sixth grade student Gavin H. is perfecting the theme from Star Wars on one of several keyboards donated by the Friends of Manchester Performing Arts.
Ms. Maino & Ms.. Provost enjoyed a piano concert during the afternoon of May 31st, as an entire class of students played Ode to Joy, The Star Wars Theme, and Believer by Imagine Dragon, to name a few.
Glow Show
Before attending the Spring Concert, families enjoyed the Middle School Glow in the Dark art exhibit. Even with the sun still shining, this was a colorful, glowing exhibit!
Thank you for the beautiful show, students & Mrs. Doherty!
GRADE 6
Science
As students start a unit on evolution and natural selection, they have been practicing their microscope skills. They have collected a number of different items to examine under the microscope: from sugar and salt to leaves, grass, flowers, and more. This knowledge of cellular structure will aid in our discussion of bacterial growth and how natural selection causes populations to evolve.
Crane Beach Science Field Trip
Students put their microscope and investigatory skills to good use while engaging in coastal education at Crane Beach in Ipswich, MA.
Thank you, Mr. Cowman, for this authentic learning experience for our students!
GRADE 7
A Major Math Recognition!
Our very own Aviva H. was a standout in this year's math meet! She finished as the top 6th grader in her Division, and 9th best in the state in the Intermediate Mathematics League of Eastern Massachusetts (IMLEM)
Congratulations Aviva! Your dedication, focus, and hard work have reaped rewards. We are so proud of you!
Thank you, Mr. Stefanek & Mr. Schlegel, for your guidance and leadership!
Name that Book!
Congratulations to our winners: Freddie, Sophie, & Katelin
Click on the video below to hear the excitement -- all over books and reading - how awesome!
Thank you for the creative idea and inspiration, Mr. DiCristina! We can't wait for our whole-school Name that Book!
GRADE 8
The 8th grade Engineering classes created Green Energy Vehicles from cardboard. The vehicles had a gear system attached to the motor and the axles to help move them along. They were powered by super capacitors, (not to be confused with the fictional "flux capacitor" used by Marty McFly in Back to the Future), which were recharged using solar panel arrays. The super capacitors had a maximum voltage of 2.7, which the solar panels were able to recharge in about 5 minutes.
Using the super capacitors, the green energy vehicles travelled up to 25 feet on a full charge! Students also calculated the speed of their green energy vehicles in inches per second. The picture below shows the super capacitors attached to alligator chips, which are then attached to the motor of their vehicle.
Thank you, Mr. Simbliaris, for immersing our students in this authentic learning experience!
Before they go: Our students love Mrs. Houde. Here are Kate & Kendall wishing her a happy birthday, even though her birthday isn't until August!
We welcome all soon to be Freshmen to visit the middle school office in the fall. We'll miss you!
A Pyramid with Promise!
Don't let high school take away your sense of joy, friends. We'll miss you!
